As someone who has been seen on a local nightly news cast wielding a lightsaber (wielding it well, I must say, knocking my foe to the curb) I can say that it does bring a measure of...say embarrassment. And the speech I made afterwards was not one of my finer moments. Luckily there is no video of the incident on the web. photos yes. sound clip yes. video, no.

I thought courts dealt with theft? And were part of a legal system which has at its heart that if you commit some wrongdoing and are found out, then there will be a consequence?
Which things do you feel the courts should not deal with? Harassment, invasion of privacy, intellectual copyright, trespass, burglary, breaking and entering?

I'm the guy in the white that destroys my friend's saber. And yes, thats the dual blade. He apparently edited the sound clip to sound much nerdier than it actually was, I had a point. It was all worth it, as when we drew lots to buy tickets, mine shocking came up first. I was a mini celebrity, all the guys in robes loved me. Unfortunately, the movie....
Again, I post this against my better judgment....bye bye shot at political office.

Frankly, I wish more kids who were picked on mercilessly by their peers would sue their tormentor's asses off. Certainly beats coming into school with shotguns...
I agree with the kid. He didn't consent to having his image thrown onto the net. The kids who did it had absolutely no right to do what they did. First and foremost, the tape wasn't their property and they stole it. Second, they didn't have the kid's permission to use his image that way. You can't say the image was public domain, because the kid never consented nor intended for it to become public.
I still get a lot of entertainment out of those movies, there's nothing wrong with that. But the *******s who subjected him to something he didn't want should be held accountable. If not, what's to stop other bullies from going to even more extremes to humiliate their peers for the sake of some laughs?

I think in English law there is a distinction. Something to do with felonious intent, in the case of burglary. I mentioned theft at the beginning of the post, too.
Anyway Agathon, which part of consent is it that you find hard to understand?

Imagine how you would feel in the same situation :-
You hear that you have to make a project , and after some deliberation , decide to go for that Swar Wars movie . You have some doubts as to whether your peers will make fun of you , but you decide to go for it anyway . You make the video , present it to your class , and keep it away . Some time later , you go to check , and find it's not there . A little later , you come to know that some friends of yours have got it . A few days/months later , you fing that your worst fears have come true , and not only are your peers laughing at you , but so are millions all over the globe .
I , personally , wouldn't want to be in such a situation , and I don't think anybody here would either .

I used to get teased mercilessly when I was younger because everybody knew that I had a thin skin. Eventually, I just stopped caring what they thought, and I became less of a target. Though this is a little different in scope, in that millions of people have seen that lightsaber video.
Who got harmed by the break and enter? The student or the school? The school has a good case for suspending the jerks who broke in. This seems to me the best solution, rather than turning to the courts, let the school punish the offenders. Have them scrub toilets for a year or so.

The "friends" of the poor lad apparently didn't stop at posting the video online:
Quote:
|
Complete with misspellings, bad grammar and cyber-style acronyms, the exchanges are used in the statement of claim as evidence that the boys lacked remorse. They also brag in them that they evaded attempts by school officials to find the culprits behind Ghyslain's misfortunes.
Ghyslain's parents and lawyers would not speak to reporters yesterday. The parents of the defendants either did not answer calls or refused to comment because the dispute was before the courts.
While the video of Ghyslain's antics generated some derisive Internet comments, others felt bad and started raising money for him. One group collected more than $3,000 (U.S.), which they used to buy him an Apple iPod portable music player.
In the excerpts from Internet chats filed in court, the four appear to be plotting ways to get the gifts sent to another address so they can keep the iPod for themselves.

Had he not made a big deal out of it, the Internet would have forgotten about it quickly the way it does most things like this. Now he's simply worsened his situation.

I think that the kids that had taken the movie must be charged with stealing and damaging school property. that's all.

The thing is, his schoolmates are likely the ones with no sense of humour and are using this as an opportunity to all gang up to harass and humiliate someone.

But let's look at the real options he has. Sue and look like an *******, or try to laugh it off and be thought pretty cool, or do nothing and let it die down Some people here seem to think he should do what will make it worse.
What else can he do? If he wants it to go away, suing is the last thing he should do.
Anyway, this reminds me of an amusing item I saw on TV a while back. I was watching a live phone in talk show and this Indian guy rang up. He had a really thick accent and began relating his problem to the sympathetic experts.
He said, "I am an Indian man from a very strict religious family and I am seeing a white woman who is not a Hindu."
Thinking they've understood his problem, the experts start rabbiting on about racial and religious tolerance.
But the man interrupts them saying, "No that is not my real problem." He then explains that he and the woman made their own sex film and he's feeling quite bad about it.
The experts advise him to destroy the tape and talk to a counselor if he feels guilty about doing it.
But he interrupts them again saying, "No that is not the problem, you see I put the film on the internet and now I want to get it off. How do I get my sex film off the internet?"
Holding in their laughter the experts explain to him that no one can do that.
This really happened: it was on CityTV here in TO.

Yeah, right.
Just like the lady on the bungee jump that crapped her pants.
Or the guy who was sucking his own d1ck
What about the college couple who got caught doing it in bed.
I STILL get those forwarded to me.
This is PERMANENT

Never seen that one.
A bed!?! What a wild and kinky idea!
Actually, let's comprise a list of internet celebrities.
1. That Turkish guy in the leisure suit. You know the "I kiss you" guy.
2. Henrik Teigen, the world's ugliest man.
3. Claire Swire, who waxed lyrical about the taste of semen.
4. The Alaskan Assassin, who sent the most pathetic, pleading love letter anyone ever saw.
5. The guy who sucked his own.
6. The Star Wars kid.

UC Berkeley, 2001: a freshman decides it'd be a cool idea to make a porno video in his dorm room and become an internet porn star.
It's awful even by porn standards, but the guy's enjoying his fame. You can Kazaa it as "David Ravages the Prostitute"

"David Ravages the Prostitute"?
I don't use Kazaa, and I think I'll pass anyway.
