In short, not dissimilar to a cafe, or as it's known in British slang, a 'caff'.

If you watch the films 'Up the Junction' or the 'Leather Boys' you'll get the idea, although many films set in 'Swinging London' feature a scene in a 'caff' or espresso bar (which some milk bars became).

At the Bramah's Tea and Coffee Museum on the South Bank in London there's a map detailing all the coffee bars and milk bars there were in Central London, from Soho to Fitzrovia, to Covent Garden and Strand.
