1. I want to know how to fiddle with the settings, before it gets "critical"
2. panag, it's not my dad's coputer. my dad hasn't got one. There's mine which is at home. My brother has 2 and may have more later. I was directed to find a way to connect them, and implement.
3. I was also directed to learn about more advanced things, since my brother plans to make a story wide network with his neighbours.
4. Ecth - everyone has a first time

usb is expensive as hell, especially if the distance of the cable is supposed to exceed like 10m or so

Drill a hole?
if the computers are in different rooms, you might be better off just making a wireless network. No cables strung all over the place then. If the computers are all in the same room, then cables are probably ok. I'll be setting up a wireless network in my new townhouse in a month or so, can't wait.

Siro, tell your Bro to think VERY carefully about #3, if theres a lot of nodes (users) esp non-tech types it could be a real pain in the arse

hi ,
bluetooth is expensive , its good , but he needs the bucks , .....
so one single USB cable shall be better , ....
on top of that , if you know one or two things about wireless , .... then as a security and speed issue you shall not want to have wireless , .....
either USB or firewire , .....

expense is relative, but that is a factor. I just hate the idea of cables everywhere. I have to live like that currently, and its a real pain.
Security isn't so much a factor, unless you're living next door to thieves. And even then, if you do it correctly you shouldn't have to worry.
Speed problems? I haven't experienced any speed problems with my wireless cards, they are on par with my cable modem, but I suppose there could be some problems using inferior outdated equipment.

hi ,
do you have any idea of what certain things cost on the other side of the ocean , .....
and yes security is a huge issue , especially since a couple good comp papers posted some articles about it and shown on national television how easy it was to break in , .... or even surf for free on some-one else's account , .....
wireless is limited to what it sends out , .... regardless of it being hooked up to "X"dsl or cable or sat , ......
so ones again usb or firewire comes out as the best deal for money , ......

The chances of someone doing that to a home network is quite slim. Unless you are unlucky and live in a hacking neighborhood, if your neighbors are like mine, they are illiterate (computer-wise) idiots. Furthermore, I haven't said one word to any of my neighbors, so unless you are particularly chatty and friendly, how would they know? And would someone come off the streets and surf in your hallway?

I think wireless is worth the cost/speed trade off if your linking a laptop to a desktop, I mean the whole point of the laptop is freedom, other than that I'll drill holes/save money/have a faster, more secure network ;O)

Really? I could get 2 network cards and a cable for less than £5 - it costs maybe £8 for a USB2 cable.
Have I been ripped off?
You're right, it's less hassle - assuming both machine have the same USB and the same OS.
Never tried runnings machines withi different OS?
That's when you go the old Client/Server route, and to be honest, I'm SCARED TO GO THERE...

What are the chances of both machines have a Firewire card? And the cost of the cable?
Panag, I think you know Israeli market conditions a lot better than I could.
It just seems strange that network cards and cables cost more than 1 USB2 cable, that's all.

Personally, I would go for ethernet hub and straight-through cables. Otherwise when the network expands, you would be throwing other bits away (like a crossover cable, or a usb cable), while still buying the hub eventually.

But Skanky, would you be responsible for setting up (and more to the point, maintaining) a network in your apt building in the first place?
IMO Siro's brother is letting himself in for a whole lot of sh!t

hi ,
wires might be "1990" , they are still rock solid when it comes to security compared to radio waves , with the exception of bluetooth , but bluetooth is so expensive , ....
how easy is it to break in , well just spend 200 bucks and a good laptop , go around and scan the airwaves , ....
from denmark to russia , from the industrial areas of chicago to the backstreets of mexico city , ..... you always find wireless without security , ......
from airport X to train on line Y you find them , ......
the software needed to stop any unwanted sneakers is to costly for an individual , ......
and then there is the issue of speed , .......
not to mention that if you have armed concrete , and that you see a lot in Israel you get certain problems with walls , etc , .....
seen a guy ones in Haifa messing up an entire building with his waves , the people just could not watch the TV when he went online , ......
the case of USB I OR USB II or firewire are therefore rapidly made , ......
have a nice fresh new week

#3 isn't THAT big. only 4 people.
And wireless things are still Illegal in Israel, since the ministry of defense and the IDF haven't finished the move from the specified ranges of technologies like bluetooth.
