Or better yet come to the San Diego meet this weekend. It can't cost more then $1200 for a round trip ticket.

If someone springs for my plane ticket, I'm game to go to Sydney.
I'd love to go to that country for sure.

actually I have considered going to Australia next year- this year is out of the question.
I'll need a lot of alcohol to get through such a long plane ride though . If i wasn't working I'd take a ship to Australia. . Damn the U.S. navy for sending me east coast in which I didn't get to go there .
I'm still not sure what I'll do for vacatio next year. I really can't say I don't have the money. I'm loaded. But I do want to pay off my house first.
I take it Sydney is the place to go. But I want to do outdoors stuff. The damn country is so damn big, I don't know if that is feasible from Sydney. I'd have to fly to another Australian city.

My Dad's cousin lives in Australia so I do have some second cousins there. If I ever went to Australia I'd totally try to free load off of them.

Yes, outdoors stuff is feasible from Sydney. You are a relatively short train ride from the Blue Mountains, for instance.
And as someone who has been around Australia, I can say hand on heart that Sydney is not 'the place' to go.
It has the Opera House, and the Harbour Bridge (copy of one in Newcastle upon Tyne, Great Britain), and the harbour itself, but it rests on its laurels. Melbourne is a much more laid back European style city, home of Australia's first national parliament, close to the countryside, with tremendous cuisine ranging from Armenian to Vietnamese (and all points in between), vineyards on its doorstep, the Great Ocean Road, temperate rainforests nearby, Victoria's Alpine country, Ninety Mile Beach, Mornington Peninsula, Wilson's Promontory, did I mention the penguins? And the migrating whales? The dolphins? The lyre birds?
http://www.visitvictoria.com/
And yes, Oerdin there are quality Australian beers. Why bother exporting them? It would only be pearls before swine.

I've been to Sydney, it's a great town. My hotel was right around the corner from the street where the homosexuals congregate and have their bars. Actually got gazed at by a man that followed me and a friend(and his girl) while we walked down the street. He followed us to a bar around the corner.
My friend and the girl he was with saw him looking at me and told me about it.
The next time he came by the girl threw herself into my arms to let the guy know I was straight.
At the time I was sort of upset, but know that I am older, I can think of it as a compliment, just not one I prefer.
The girl told me later at another bar, that if I had been as open the night before(I had a headache and was pissy) I would have been with her instead of my friend.
He talked to some old WWII vet while me and her slow danced to, get this, Faith No More.
Best part of Sydney, remembering I was in the Navy at the time, was that the bar we were at only closed from 1:00 to 4:00 am on Mondays for cleanup.
24 hour bars, awesome!
ACK!

Anybody got a boat? I'd love to go back to Aus, esp. Byron Bay, but I'm not flying anywhere ever again. Bloody fascist airport 'security.'

Sydney is a pretty good place to start off at. Its a pretty clean city, and the weather is not to bad.
As for outdoors stuff, its not so good (although that depends on what you want to do). The Blue Mountins are close by, and whilst they are nice, other places have alot more to offer.
To the north, starting in northern NSW and extending through Qeensland, are the great coastal areas and rainforest (culminating in the Great Barrier Reef and Cape York.
Way to the west there is Uluru (Ayres Rock), the Kimberley region (which in parts is absolutely stunning), Arnhem Land (well, North west from Sydney) as well as some amazing natural formations such as the Pinnicles.
If you want to see the outdoors Australia (that is, venture out of the capital cities) it pays to plan your trip properly, its a big and sparsly populated country.

planning was never one of my strong suits
I like to wing things.
What I need is a few million dollars, and I could just tour Australia at my leisure taking a few years if necessary

To do so, you'd have to BE one of the following:
1) Independantly wealthy old money
2) Independantly wealthy nouveau riche (that's froggy for 'new money')
3) A rock star
4) A movie star
5) An entrepreneur (more froggy for 'lucky dude')
You would also need at least two of the following:
1) A wing
2) A prayer
3) Insect repellant
4) A good pair of walking shoes

Evolution in action. The mozzies and flies aren't even affected by it anymore. They will bite you even as you are spraying repellant on.

Just set a date I'll try and be there - Saturday is the best day/night for me because I have to drive up to Sydney and back on Sunday.
I suggest pub (but a nice one) followed possibly by an informal dinner at a moderately priced restaurant for those who want to kick on. Then the kiddies can hit the clubs.
Somewhere like the Rocks/Circular Quay might be good and central. Other options would be Oxford street or Chinatown. I like the Italian joints around Darlinghurst....Bondi has too many bloody foreigners.

You know, I was under the misconception that they just preferred Chinese food - like they get one look at me trying to run away and they all holler out 'Panda Express!'

I shall be arriving in Sydney next Thursday, so people who are attending state a preferred date. I can do pretty much anytime at the moment.
13th or 20th of September seem like potentials.
