Maybe, but I usually don't have too much of a problem with food supplies and the four picks could be used for something that would give us more of a late game edge.

That depends on if we shall play creative ... If we play creative we need to compensate the relatively slower start. I suggested aquatic and artifacts for this purpose. Creative itself gives the best for the late game ...

Sub costs +6, Aquatic = +5 & +1 food = +4? If one has the time & $$ later on in the game, then the value of Aquatic fades accordingly. I see +1 food as allowing the swapping of workers to the factories or labs (same as +1 pro could swap workers back to the farms) -- so I never take it as I’d pay the 3 for +1 pro or +1 res first. I see Sub as having value throughout the game, starting later on in the early game when the home planet can hold more than 12 -- and allowing us to focus on fewer planets for the same level of capability.
If one goes all out on an early berserk attack, then the value of Sub won’t loom large -- but in that case the others won’t be so critical either.
I see Aquatic helping us out at the VERY start, and sometimes throughout the mid game -- so I think that it is kind of expensive for the value generated. Maybe the time differential justifies the cost.

I think you could say that most of the picks don't matter late in the game. The biggest jump you can get at the ealry part of the game is what I tend to prefer.
Many have the the same impact, but of all of them the +food is my least favorite and in fact I never choose it.
Give me that extra pop and I can spare a worker for food until get rolling.
Of +P, +R +F, I thnk food is the one that goes stale the fastest.

Its not just the early game rush that aqua, uni, tolerant, etc help with, its the early game expansion phase, which is the most critical phase of the game.
Also, it is important to note that on impossible it is likely that more then one race will be subterranean, meaning that it is available to be captured(most often the sarkas, who also grow fast and produce more food then others).

Yes slaves can be used to give you a trait you want. Planet max pop, send a Sak to that planet and make room for more. Watch if Lith or Tols though. If you send food eaters to a Lith planet, you may need some food structures or a Tol will need some pollution structures. You may need morale boosters if you were a Uni and start using slaves.

Vmxa, I agree with everything but the last - if you are uni you will not need morale boosters with the slaves ....
I know that with morale using governments you need Alien Control Centers to negate the -20% morale from mixed pop.
And Old n Slow - try speedkill with a creative race (huge galaxy, impossible, 8 opponents, no game reloading). If you can do it for ~190 turns with a non aquatic race then I will agree with you :P
I know that a non creative race can do it faster (for ~150 turns)
