Settler II has only 512MB RAM?
In DanQ's column he states that "Settler II", the apolyton server, is a dual Xeon 2.0GHz processor with 512MB RAM.
Why use all the money for a dual Xeon, but only 512MB RAM? I have heard in my database class (from one of my university teachers who make a living tuning databases) that the amount of RAM is perhaps the most influencial factor in database performance.
Since the apolyton website and in particular the apolyton forums are database backed I would think that an extra 512MB RAM would give a nice performance increase for a relatively quite small investment.

Indeed, that was my initial remark when ACS was back online after the crash of Settler, but back then nobody seemed to take me seriously as usually.

Depends on what ram you are using.
Non-brand RAM IS cheap, but I assume that you want quality for Settler II, rght? With EEC correction and whatnot they are not as cheap as you think.
Still something to consider, that's whare these donations could be used for.
no, I'm not giving up, join me until they give in !!!!

If we could get an address for Apolyton, we could raise our money for RAM and just mail the stick to them. 2.0 GHz is a 133MHz motherboard, right?

No, no, no!!!
You get it wrong, Harry. First of all Settler II = Dell PowerEdge 1750 with 2x Intel Xeon 2 GHz, 512 MB ECC DDR-266, 73 GB SCSI HDD, which means it requires an additional (1x) 512 MB ECC DDR-266 DIMM memory module. Can be obtained via RackShack, I would presume.
Now, should we send a memory module by mail, Dan?

The board may support that much but does the OS? I may can get a discount on a stick of Simple RAM with no ECC. Want me to check?

Actually GNU/Linux does support well larger amounts of RAM, so it should not be an issue. The server runs Red Hat Linux 9.0.

Oh you people are so clueless. I have actually once sent mail to Dan as Finnish express mail, so his address isn't that secret. Dunno about Markos' address. But I wouldn't recommend sending money or any items such as RAM modules to Dan, without his consent, because he has quite clearly stated that he doesn't want your dosh now. It would actually be quite rude, wouldn't it? Especially as he has said no.

RPM isn't what it all cracked up to be. The overall transfer rate is much more important. Since it's a SCSI Ultra320 drive it can't be all that slow.

Nice try Paul, but somehow I don't think people will be sending their hardware or money to you.
On-topic: Increasing the RAM only helps if the server currently rams into the limit on a regular basis. If I've been listening correctly, the problem is too many connections lasting too long. With that the case, only solutions that decrease either the length or number of connections will help.
