you can build the same system cheaper just by buying the parts... $400 even will get you a decent computer

One year is way too short.

I bought a PIII 500MHz Dell Optiplex GX1 for my kids on ebay for $100 with shipping. If you dont need a PC-rocket dont waste the money.

512 mb of memory is always going to be better than 256, but you have to make sure your motherboard can handle it.
And the OS, Win98/ME can't handle more then 384MB. (after that, perfance will go downhill or won't improve at best)

maybe i can rummage together enough for a cheap computer like that one... five years is probably just enough before you need something new... but whats wrong with a one year warranty? this computer has gone five years with no need for a warranty

A one-year warranty from a manufacturer is utter crap. A computer should be able to last longer, so a longer warranty would be appropriate.
Besides, the warranty on most of the parts from the parts manufacturers is at least two years.

Sounds kinda naive...

That your current PC never broke down, doesn't mean your new one won't.

Try Dells, they are good values, and feature high-quality parts. I may be able to get you into a secret part of the site that offers really good deals.

If you are using ME or 98, it's your own fault

Speer, if you want a computer, I can build you a better one for cheaper than that. I build quite a few on the side, and Dells are good, but you can only get a 2400 in that price range, and i wouldn't waste my money on that...

when something breaks, replace it? so why can't i just buy new parts if this compaq system for 449.00 breaks?

but is it really a good idea to build your own computer? I mean aren't there a whole lot of compatibilty issues you got to worry about?
