Question for German speakers who have watched Saving Private Ryan
So, near the end of the movie, when the Wehrmacht soldier is fighting the Jewish American soldier, finally the German gets on top of him and slowly puts the knife through the American's heart. The American sees his life is about to end and makes a personal plea for the German dude to stop. So then the German dude tells him to be quiet and says some personal stuff to him.
I never caught what he was saying, only the end, where he says, "Es ist FUBAR!"
What else did he say?
That scene is always been very disturbing, seeing the Jewish guy beg for his life was done very well.

Well, according to imdb.com it goes like this:
Quote:
|
As the German soldier stabs a US soldier to death, he says: "Gib' auf, du hast keine Chance! Lass' uns ein Ende machen es ist so viel leichter für dich!" This translates: "Give up, you don't stand a chance! Let's end this here, it will be easier for you like this!" The words are spoken in Austrian-accented German.

Damn, now if I had seen that in text I actually can make out most of it.
Thanks Winston.
Your autographed copy of Falco is on the way. I ran out of David Hasselhoff cd's.

Come on it had its moments. EVERYONE agrees the opening scene was a masterpiece. (They actually used a separate writer - Frank Darabont - for just that scene, though you won't see it in the credits).
I did think the line, "Angels on our shoulders" when the mustangs showed up and blew up that tank was pretty bad though. I laughed out loud at that.

this film kicked ass.
For a 90's film it was excellent.
True it can't compare to earlier war films, But what can?
modern movies are crap for the most part.

I tend to hate the early war movies, especially those with John Wayne in them, because they come across as uber-patriotic

I dont remember the movie and I dont remember the scene, but "Es is fubar" sounds pretty much like "Es ist vorbei" which means "It's over".
I am just guessing though

I just found a site that has the dialogs of the scene written (in german): http://www.filmkritik.blogspot.com/2...k_archive.html
I was right it meant: Du wirst sehen, es ist gleich vorbei. You'll see, it's over in a second.

I bet you like Catch 22... And I'm curious what you think of Sergeant York.

actually I wouldn't go back that far. when I mean older, I only mean 20 or 30 years ago .
I never could get into those old black and white war movies very much.

I don't remember this scene, and honestly I have no desire to watch the whole thing a second time. Except the opening scene it was pure crap. The word "FUBAR" with a bit phantasy could be understood as either "vorbei" or "vorüber", which both mean "over".

Or "Es ist furchtbar", which sums up that film pretty well.
