That sounds like the final battle in the campaign.

And I love the game (Shadow Magis especially).
It is so damn moddable too. I am thinking of making a D&D mod for it. So it conforms to D&D terminology and standards, as much as possible.
Also the rules and even the graphics can be changed.

There's a fair bit of new spells (I'm not really sure how many, since I didn't play AoW2 much, but I would guess about 1-3 for each sphere), three new races, a new unique building and unit for each existing race, and some new game features like being able to create your own magic items.
EDIT: Also a new terrain set and a possibilty of a third map layer (shadow world). I don't think any of the scenarios that come with the game make use of all three layers at once, however...

That's cool. That's what AoW 2 should be.

Yes and that new building for each race, is more than just your typical building. It doesn't just unlock the new unit, it also has a unique ability for that race. For the Elves for example it hides their cities in the forest, meaning your enemies can't see the city until they are on top of it...concealment basically.
And in the campaign they have some that make use of all of the layers. The second campaign map...well depending on the path you take, the map I am in now has all three.

Damn, just when I'd written the AoW's off as never going to come close to the original MoM, they go and produce what sounds like a much better version.

I am still waiting. I loved AoW, but was not able to getting to AoW2 so far. I only finished one campaign and have not gotten back to it.
I use to download maps from the web for AoW, could not get enough.

Yeah, Shadowmagic is great. It's everything that AoW2 should have been and possibly more.
Though, I still run around with my powerful hero and his 15 Iron Maidens... it's the elven cavalry army of doom. In one turn most average enemy units are decimated. And walls only keep my hero out.

You should use the item creator building to make your hero an item with Phase.
In general I like a good mix of Iron Maiden and the Centaur. Load a Centaur up with that new Seeker Enchantment and he is devastating.
Oh and if you are every in a jam, say being sieged by 25+ low level units and you only have 5-10 in your city. Lay waste with the spell, Sacred Wrath, I believe it is called. It attacks every guy on the screen with one attack. Cast that twice and all level one units and even some level two units are dead.
Also have you seen great hail with the new Warmage skill (+2 Attack, +2 Damage for direct damage spells). It is devastating.

I have tremors which damages all non-flying units and walls. That makes rather short work of any siege, especially because I tend to have level 2 or 3 units only, except for what my hero dominates.
(I had a unit of doombats and a beholder flying around at some point, which was a somewhat atypical elven unit )
