Soviet OOBs
I am looking for some Soviet OOBs for the 40th Army, and attached units, during the invasion of Afghanistan 1979-89. Also, if anybody knows where I can find some maps of Soviet force deploymentsduring that war, I would be much obliged.

www.orbat.com has exactly what you're after at: http://www.orbat.com/site/history/hi...my1979-85.html While there's no map, most of the units have their bases listed.

Just a note: a 'MRR' is a motor rifle regiment, which consisted of three battalions of infantry with APCs as well as a battalion of tanks. From the little I've read on the Soviets in Afganisan, most of the MRRs sent there were second rate units from Central Asia and were equiped with obselete equipment (ie, T-55s and T-62s instead of T-72s and T-80s and BMP-1s and BTR-60s instead of BMP-2s and BTR-80s). The quality of the Soviet troops and equipment increased as the war dragged on, but the average quality was always well below what the Soviets had on the inter-German border.

Thanks guys, the links are much appreciated You are quite right Case, BMP-2s and BTR-80s werent introduced untill late 1985, when the Soviets had long since abbandoned major operations in Afghanistan and the war was already entering its final phase.
