Depends on the bank. If I was in charge, I'd prefer to send men in to the front and hold up the cashiers using guns. I'd then use a large Cat-type earth mover to ram through the wall and into the safe (using meticulous plans drawn up well in advance) and have another small team of men to unload all the loot from the safe into an unmarked van - forget the small fry the cashiers can access. Anyway, the teams of men would get street clothes from the van, and dump the loot, their burglar outfits, and the heavy weaponry in to it. They could then disperse into the city, later to reconvene at HQ to collect their cut. The unmarked van would be driven across town and in to a warehouse, where the loot would be transferred to another vehicle or vehicles a-la the Italian Job, and taken safely to HQ while the federales are still looking for the original van. Job done.

Hehe, I haven't spent 20 years watching crime movies without learning a thing or two
Never mind the bullet proof glass, you could just point the gun at a customer's head and threaten to shoot if any of the cashiers even thinks about hitting the silent-alarm button...

If they where really serious about it, they'd probably bring body armour and assault rifles. Can bullet proof glass stand against something like an ak47?
Not all banks have bullet proof glass, anyways. I don't think I've ever seen that here in Canada. The only place I can remember ever seeing that for sure is in Detroit. EDIT: Well, the big banks probably do. Not the small branchs though.

When you rob a bank, unless there's a guard, there should be little resistance because the bank is insured, so the employees don't care.
You also need to be wary of dye packets.
Instead of armed bank robbery, I'd recommend ripping off ATMs, either by cracking them open, or in the case of stubborn ones, pulling them out by car. Although there is less to be gained, the risk is lower and so is the potential penalty.

You know what I'd do if I wanted to rob a bank?
Disclaimer: I do not want to rob banks, and I'd never do anything like this, so this is fictional!
I'd check out which clerk can access the vault (you can see this in many banks here). Then wait for 2 or 3 months, so no one should be able to trace you back with those cameras. Then follow the clerk home, study the home, study the person. Study which days carry most money inside.
Now, all you need is black suit and a mask (hey why not do it with style once we're at it), when the clerks family is at home, enter it with your gun pointed at them and the silencer on. Other guys can carry assault rifles, just for the effect, get some of those lasers, you look pro now. Only one person speaks, and that's the one who has to do it. Because the person you have choosed must have a basement in the house, you direct the family to it.
You make the rest of the family call to whatever places they need to, so they won't be missed for few days.
You tie them up and make them blind with scarf or something and treat them like hostages. Total control.
Then the clerk, you tell her/him to go to job, and get amount x of money from the vault. You'll be waiting with at the house, and if troubles comes, you shoot them all. THat's what you say that is. But you treat the family nice otherwise, don't beat them or threaten them all the time.
Now when the clerk comes back from the job with bags full of money, you take only one person with you and release the rest. Leave some explosive looking things into the house and tell them NOT to touch it, because it will blow up. Now is your time to flee, you take one as a hostage and tell if they even think about being followed by cops, the house is gone and the person with us is shot instantly. You tell them that you will be releasing the person in one hour, after which they can call the cops. You have naturally checked out the money before fleeing, so that there will be no marking explosives inside that colours the money etc, and no tracking devices.
After carefully planning escape routes, you do then release the person taken with you like you promised.
I figure that's a good way to rob a bank, because then you are not caught on camera, no one has seen your face and only few people have heard your voice. Hard to track down if you carefully plan the whole thing.

Actually it's better to send the clerk to the job, and then evacuate the family to new location. So she actually has more to think about than just calling the cops to run down the house. Now you have real hostages.. but you need to do fast transaction because otherwise the bank will notice the theft and you're screwed, cops for sure.
Say one of your men will be inside the bank to watch the clerk all day too, so he/she better not **** around.
You can tell her to take the money and run if she has to, because she won't get into trouble, it'll be on us after cops will catch her, but the important thing is cops never get to us easy, and she/he gets her family back safe and doesn't have to pay a dime back.

Well, if you go to New York...
"Mayor Bloomberg lashed out at bank executives yesterday, blaming them for a dramatic spike in robberies even as the bosses huddled with Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly to search for answers.
"Some banks don't care. ... You pass a note, you get some money and you can get away with it," Bloomberg said. "Some day it's going to lead to somebody getting shot and killed."
The mayor blasted the lax security at some bank branches as "unconscionable" and upbraided bankers for failing to protect their workers and customers.
