Turnin over a new leaf: New game parameters
Well I guess it's time, with voting over and the decision reached to start a new game without the long end-turn waits: we need to get some polls and discussion going on what we are going to change about this game.

The set-up for the current game that will take most of us with less advanced PCs forever to complete is:

Civilisation: Vikings
Colour: Black

Game settings
Version: Play the World v1.21f
Difficulty: Deity
Barbarians: Raging

No Elimination
No Regicide
No mass regicide
No victory point locations
No Capture the Princess

Civ specific abilities enabled
Preserve Random Seed enabled
No Accelerated Production
Cultural Conversions enabled
No respawn AI
No culturally linked starts

Victory Conditions
Domination
Space Race
Conquest
Cultural
NO Diplomatic

Map Settings
Size: Huge
Ocean: 80%
World type: Archipelago


What do we want to change for this game? The problem with the last game was the size of the map and the number of civs. It is debatable which of these is the worst (something I will test in the next few hours).

This poll has several options:
  • change only world size and number of opposing civs
  • change only opposing number of civs
  • change only world size
  • change lots more than these two options
There are so many different combinations of options I could include, but the reason for the restart is JUST because of the length of time needed to play the turns and wait in between turns, and this should be affected only by the world size and number of other civs, unless someone can show me evidence otherwise. Hence, when we voted to restart, we were doing so with a new game that would primarily change at least one of these two options.

Poll is open 3 days. If the result is one of the first three options then after this expires another poll (or two) will go up addressing the change to this(these) option(s). If the 4th option is chosen we need a discussion thread and some more time to decide which things to repoll.

Me, I think we should repoll only these two options. We have an interesting game setup with the Vikings, Archipelago, Deity etc, and we haven't tested that yet. I would like us to persist with it, only changing what needs to be changed: map size and number of civs.

The last one was a hand made map and I believe it was far less than 80 % water from what I saw of it. I would suggest dropping the number of civs down as the map size doesn't add a lot more data, the additional numbers of units, cities, civs and their info adds the bulk of the extra data that slows down computing time.

My feelings exactly GF - as for the map, there will be a separate poll on whether to randomly generate it or actually officially invite BFM and Togas (or anyone else who wants to!) to submit a map to play on.

Their last one looked great, and I can't wait to SP it!

Additionally, if we used a Huge map with less civs and A LOT more water it should act as a better barrier to prevent inter AI contact.

Im just going to throw this out here.

CiverDan was playing along in the last chat with 1.27.

He commented that loading times were dramatically reduced and turns went 'far smoother'.

Just a thought...perhaps, just perhaps there is not a need to restart?

Even if it isn't bad now, wait til the industrial age. It will become impossible then.

Togas and BFM are already working on a new map IIRC.

Reduce the number of civs. That is the most important aspect IMHO.

Yes, we are working on a Large map for 16 civs. The % of water will be increased a lot; also, the number of inter-AI contacts will be far lower than on the first map.

It'll be a fun map to play on with a seafaring nation like the Vikings. I realize that the naval aspect wasn't quite as present as I hoped on the last map. But on the next one, it will be.

We set the number of civs at 16 because it leaves lots of strategic options open (for example: a huge opponent with almost no resources), and also, trading will be an important aspect.

We can have this map ready pretty soon, so we can start the game quickly.

I would also recommend a change of colour, just to make the minimap look cooler :-)

I've got a question-- what exactly does conquest do if domination is on? Won't domination only not get credited if we slash and burn our way? I've never erally understood that.

well 1.27 is good , but the UK patch is worth zip , still way to many problems , .....

and since some people ( UK ) cant upgrade , we should stick with the old one , .....
