Confess! Who here drives an SUV?
And what is your justification for it? Ego is OK as long as you explain.

nothing's wrong with SUVs if you got a reason to drive them... they are very strong vehicles... now suburban soccer moms who drive them is just plain a waste of the SUVs potential... if these cars could talk, they'd be crying all the time
i do wonder about why so many people here in philly drive around in range rovers and hummers though...

and in the past two years, ATVs have become real popular for boys around my age... none of them have yet to explain why they own such vehicles when they live in the city... they spend all their time driving around, racing, and doing stunts on residential streets, often at night.

I drive a 2003 Highlander Limited in the winter (parents' car, of course).
We got it because we like the ground clearance because of the snow, the four-wheel drive and vehicle skid control and anti-lock brakes for ice/snow driving, and it's a very reliable vehicle.

I myself drive a Ford Escape, while members of my family own a Ford Expedition and Explorer. We actually use them to carry cargo, besides the 4 or 5 passengers, as well as towing.
People who drive around in Excursions for the "social status" are ignorant and wasteful. This is coming from a right wing nut conservative, too!

Are SUVs uniquely North American? They don't seem to be that common elsewhere, and when they do appear they are off-roading.
Don't panic, the Susie Q is not yet street legal.

I do (well, technically they call it something else, but it's an SUV). I do it because I use the cargo space, and because it's uncomfortable for me to ride/drive in smaller vehicles.

According to law here to carry 6 people you need an suv or van.

After smashing my current car I considered a BMW X5, but then decided not to buy it - not a single insurance company would agree to sell theft insurance for this car. They are stolen on average 5 weeks from purchase. Russia has a lot of dirt roads, you see.

'92 Ford Explorer, 17mpg
My first was a '91, again 17mpg
Once I'm comfortably living on my own with a big enough living wage, I absolutely plan to buy at least a hybrid, though pure electrics or hydrogen drives are prefered. I guesstimate 'bout 10 years away from making that purchase...
Justification: Mountain-esque town; we do get snow and ice on the roads; higher road clearance and visibility; 4-wheel drive. Additionally, many people around here have even larger vehicles, so the risk of me achieving, very bloodily, "oneness" with my auto are somewhat lessened in a SUV than in a deathbox car.

And get 3mpg? No thank you.
Seriously, prices will likely drop further for such vehicles that are already on the market. 10 years from now if I'm working in the architectural field or thereabouts I'll be making pretty decent money, so I'm not too worried about cost. I just know I'm not likely willing to spending much over $30,000 for one unless I have enough savings to justify the expense.

Because of the I-have-a-bigger-car-than-you-symdrome. Of course that leaves the question why not everyone drives a bus or a truck

I honestly wouldn't care how LARGE is my car, as long as I could comfortably seat there, and it was a great ride.
