Power out in NY and elsewhere?
Heard that ABC news reports power outages in NYC and northern NJ. CNN says in Chicago and Detroit as well. Anyone else hear anything? Any word from our posters in those areas? GePap has gone quiet all of a sudden.

Power disaster hits North America
Last Updated Thu, 14 Aug 2003 16:44:29
TORONTO - A power outage such as North American hasn't seen in almost 40 years has crippled huge areas of Canada and the United States. Industry, government and transportation have ground to a complete halt. There's no clear explanation why the power is out.
So far it isn't clear just how extensive the outage is - but reports of power cuts have been reported all the way from Chicago to New York and from Ottawa to Washington.
The disaster struck just after 4:15 p.m. ET and with the afternoon rush hour about to hit, it looks as if traffic gridlock is about to hit every major urban centre including, Toronto, Montreal, New York, Chicago and Detroit.
In November 1965 a blackout struck eastern Canada and the northeast U.S. turning out the lights for more than 13 hours.

OK, who tripped over the extension cord?

I work in Ottawa but i live in Gatineau, on Quebec's side of the river. I just got home and saw this on CNN. Everything is fine over here but i tried to call at work and got no answer. I'm guessing they sent everybody home.

heard that Niagra Mohawk grid is down. Not sure why that would impact HydroQuebec, though.

They're on Hydro One over there (form. Hydro Ontario)

I think someone messed up. French Canadian TV is (mostly) based in Montreal and they're all live and reporting about the story.

good - seems like theres some exageration. DC, Montreal, Chicago all seem to be up despite preliminary reports.

I thought they were in Toronto but apparently not.
Local news is showing images from downtown Ottawa. Major traffic jams! Ouch!
I finished at 3:30: just in time to get here without any problems.

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A New York State official said the Niagara Mohawk power grid overloaded on Thursday, causing a massive power outage, CNN reported, and New York Major Michael Bloomberg said it was likely a natural occurrence.
"It may be well into the evening before power comes back on," Bloomberg told the U.S. cable television network. He said smoke from a Consolidated Edison Inc. plant in the city was due to the plant's automatic shutdown, not to a fire, as had been reported.
He said, "I can tell you 100 percent sure that there is no evidence as of this moment whatsoever of any terrorism."
A massive power outage swept across swaths of the eastern United States and Canada on Thursday, leaving sections of New York, Detroit, Cleveland and Toronto without electricity, witnesses said.
It was not immediately clear whether the Niagara Mohawk problem caused the wider outage. "
