The statement is perfectly correct. You merely confused 'a while' with 'awhile', which has a different usage. Once again you failed to check your facts before taking a dig at me.

Hmmmm, didn't you read the definition, A WHILE was part of the definition. So their usage is technically interchangable.

When used in my sentence it strictly means for a period of time, with no implication of a short period of time. As such the sentence is indisputably correct.
So your post is wrong. More to point it was unnecessary.

From the dictionary
Quote:
|
Usage Note: Awhile, an adverb, is never preceded by a preposition such as for, but the two-word form a while may be preceded by a preposition. In writing, each of the following is acceptable: stay awhile; stay for a while; stay a while (but not stay for awhile).
|
So as you see they are the same, just gramatically different

But 'for a while' means for a period of time, with no implication of a short time. So Rah's first critical post is simply wrong.
Awhile can in some settings carry the implication of a short time, though even then notice it is a later definition in Rah's source after 'for some time'.

In defence of Dr. Spike, I would say I use "for a while" expression in both Serbian and English quite often. Partly because it means nothing

This thread is just too much... AH of all posters accuse another Apolyton member of posting... off-topic! What's next, DrSpike has created a double log-in (Mr Hyde?)...
The irony, the irony...
Whatever it takes to keep Apolyton alive and kicking is fine with me... The Doc is witty and writes clever posts (why shouldn't he, he's an economist! ) The same thing is true for AH (not the economist part, right?)...
Hm, come to think about it... I guess I like the thread... Oh well, carry on then, lads!

This thread is like the badguy in a c-movie horror flick. Just as you think is it dead, it comes back for another go.
Don't worry CR, AH loves my posts really.

I didn't really picture you and Horsey having PM discussions.
As to the avatar it was a Blademaster, an Orc from Warcraft3. I don't play that now, so I returned to LeChuck in the interim period whilst I decide my next avatar.

Well, I neatly avoided saying I haven't played it for a while, because that might have provoked further incorrect use of the online dictionary.

Yes, heaven forbid that any taunting would lead to additional posts.
