Crashing problem
At various times when playing a game the program will sometimes crash if I click on certain things, mainly cities or advisors. But it doesn't happen all the time. It seemed to be fairly random, but now when I conquer a city it crashes after the "how many resistors" screen no matter what I do. I've re-instaled the game many times and there are no error messages, so my game is basically stuck which sucks cause I was doing fairly good. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks,
Jesse

It is a good idea to give the operating system and hardware specs in these problems.
I have been having some contact with Firaxis with crashes on PTW on my newest rig. This is XP PRO. It is intermittent. I can go for hours with out a failure. We have tried things such as settign Vid and sound to basuic, no acceleration. No othe taks, no antivirus and many more esoteric things. I even went into the bios to disable the sound. I then booted using only 128MB of mem instead of the 1GB. So far no solution. I believe it is direct X, but it could be motherboard and hyperthreading or even video.

Sounds like you have a hell of a problem vmxa1.
JustJeshb, contacting infogrames has never failed me. Especially with things like this were there are no error messages. If your game was working before then maybe you changed some settings or installed some new software, check it out and see if you can isolate your problem.

XP does seem to give occasional strange crashes.
My most recent one (XP Home) was - take city and choose to raze = crash. Take city, choose appoint governor, abandon city = no crash.

How am going to have a nice day if you post a statement that you have no idea if it is correct or not. Not to mention how much space it took you to say nothing.
It could in fact be that it does not have anything to do with direct x, but you do not know that, so why say it? At least stop putting so many blank lines in your post.
Have a nice day.

When you say Civ crashes, does it actually restart the computer, has a strange behaviour, or does it simply freeze ? (i.e the music continues, but the graphics seem not to change)
On huge maps in later game, the game will take much time to calculate the commerce grid everytime it is changed. That means, everytime a harbor or airport is built, everytime a city is founded, and everytime a port / airport is destroyed (which often happens when you conquer cities).
For example, in the current game I'm playing on a 254*254 map, a recalculation of the commerce grid takes two minutes on my P4 1.3 GHz. And it recalculates several times a turn. During this time, the game gives the impression to freeze.
If that's what happening to you, you should make a choice: either playing on huge maps and have long waiting times, or playing less epic games and have short waiting times. On today's computers, the waiting time is nearly nonexistent on Standard maps, and short in Large maps. Keep in mind the game was first optimized for standard maps and 8 simultaneous Civs

I think I have heard of this problem before, search the forums for a related thread, and then check the infogrames support pages.
