At first, it did nothing on my system. After I'd had it a couple of times, I turned off my firewall. The next time I got it, it downloaded Gator.

That should be it, this was at work and we have pretty good security over there.

I have a hardware firewall, but I have seen the Gator install prompt. I thought a firewall blocked inbound connections, so wouldn't necessarily be relevant here, unless ZoneAlarm Pro has additional features.
hi ,

it depends on how you configure it , ......

you can always install surfinguard from www.finjan.com , ...... just in case , ......

Again, the pop-up, and the mysterious 'long window' pop-up just before. This time I was able to grab this from it:

These days, I'm making a point of browsing Apolyton with my firewall turned off. That way I get a truckload of Gators every day. But it enables me to report to DanQ the origins of Gator.

But yeah. Do like panag said. That should eliminate Gator.

That remains to be seen. But at least he won't have to deal with Gator.

hi ,

sure he will , no more pop-ups , if that does not give one a nice day , ......

there are plenty of tools out there on the net to stop them , some are free , some are not , but the best and first thing to do is to plug some holes in your OS by getting the free updates and patches for it , .....

Is it really necessary to run that every time you get the popup? I thought clicking 'no' would be sufficient.

Even though you click "no" the damn program still writes files in your Registry...So if you don't mind Gator leaving a footprint in your Registry...

What harm can the 'footprint' cause?

Go ask somebody to place a footprint on, for instance, your face. Then you will know how much harm a footprint can cause.:

Well, HTML and JavaScript can't do this, it's gotta be ActiveX. That's why people who don't use MSIE have no problems with it.

For those who use MSIE - try turning off ActiveX or at least set warning.

Yeah, Gator always comes via the ActiveX applet. That can also be seen in the screenshot someone posted here, in which it asks to be executed.

I almost never use MSIE as it's so prone to spyware and other malicious activity. Most rants here would have been solved by using a different browser.

If you ask Microsoft, they would say that ActiveX enhances your browsing experience

Maybe it does.....

No need to rant, Asmodean. Just use a better browser and stop whining. Actually you never need MSIE, if you're "browser aware."

Make sure you have a recent version or a nightly build.

Dammit. Do I have to explain what a nightly build is? Okay, well, it's a nightly build generated for several platforms out of the current CVS contents.

All latest ones: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/

You could always try Firebird. It seems quite stable now.
