I honestly fail to understand why the given information is not enough for Dan to locate the culprit. This is by no means an accusation. I just don't see what extra information we could give. On the other hand, I haven't gotten the Gator for at least 3 days now. Is anyone still getting it?

What you have said above is fair comment, Asmodean, and by no means is any ill intent taken.
The problem is that the technical information provided here to date unfortunately does not include any meaningful marker that I have been able to find -- be it a company name, domain, cross-referenceable identification number or what you have -- to identify the offending advertiser(s) that we have signed on .

And I doubt that we will ever discover the "smoking gun" since it looks like the unscrupulous advertiser is covering their tracks rather well...

So what Dan, how many ad services do you have? Is there any doubt that the main provider is responsible. Come on take some action.

I bet you won't have the problem with a Linux box running Moz or Konquerer.

Maybe require to see what possible URL any given advertizer could possibly link to. I know this would be difficult, but those advertizers with nothing to hide should have no problem giving out this information. Unless the companies that Apolyton has signed up with, then use subcompanies that also use subcompanies etc.
This sucks

It's an ActiveX applet, Panag. Read what I said. Alas, it also seems to appear on MSIE only under Windows.
Dan,
just get donations and premium memberships available, and we can get rid of ads in no time.

Seen the ad as well on the uni computers.
Again, all I could provide has already been shown by Asmodean, et al.
I concur with the suggestion to request that all advertisers to apolyton reveal their secondary sites. The companies that decline, you can refuse to allow them to advertise on Apolyton, on the grounds of this Gator problem.

Lets see if I can do a screenshot.
I have a thin window for interland, that I can't close unless I drag the ad half-way across the screen. Seems very similar at first glance to the Gator ad.
I don't know if this helps, but I'll post it up anyway.

Are some of the adds not region specific? I haven't had a gator ad from here and it might help if we could identify the region that those who have had the add originate from. If its all we know its a general ad. That would at least reduce the size of the haystack that needs to be combed through.

I got it here in Denmark. But the last 4 days, I haven't seen it. My Apolyton habits haven't changed, though. So it's pretty strange that it has stopped, as everyone else is still getting it.

Dan, just stop buying ads from whoever your provider is. It is not up to you to trace it down. It is up to UGO or whoever.

UGO has been very responsive to a crtain other site in tracking down the third party providers who do this and deep sixing them. I am not certain what technical info from the site was required, but whatever it was, they got it.

I think many testers and a conclusion that Gator is an ActiveX applett would marginally be more reputable than your "test", panag.
Quite frankly, I pity those who a) use MSIE b) don't have a pop-up blocker c) willfully let pop-ups appear.

Even after catching one of the third party providers, you go through the same thing with another one periodically. The way to keep them off is to limit the Ad company to ads runs on their server, without third party providers.

Just hold them responsible Dan. Grow some cojones. Start looking for another service. Or start susbscription. Be a credible threat to leave.

Which is why we need a subscription model ASAP.
@Frozzy: I wilfully let pop-ups appear. But I only do it to help locate the Gator culprit.

Oh and panag: Gator is installed via an ActiveX applet
