Rent the movie... It's directed by Stanley Kubrick and it's a great starter for getting you into the subject. There is also a bit about him in my Computer Encyclopedia. Alex had a historical book about him, so you might want to E-mail him.
But watch out: the scenario has a bunch of hypothetical stuff (Encounter with Mithridat, Gracchus, Sertorus etc...) though most of the characters are historical and contemporary with Spartacus their paths did not cross in real life.
