The SPDG-3 Starts Here and Now!
This is the start of the SPDG Number Three.
Togas and I changed the World Size and Number of Opponents, as requested by the polls.
We took the liberty of changing the colour to Yellow, because the Minimap will be easier to make out, and Yellow is the colour of the Banana.
Below is a screenshot of the start position, and an overview of the settings.
Now, we need someone shouting around all over Apolyton that this game is starting. NuclearMaster..?
There is no government yet - I think this is the perfect time to start up some elections, or to continue with the last DG's goverment. MrWIA, will you do the honours here?
Of course, this game can't actually move forward without a government. But it can't without the in-game start either, so both are required.
A downloadable save file will be made available soon in this thread.
note: leader name might still be changed
edit: the wheat tile is also a bonus grassland tile.

Spain right across the water??? That's a little too close, isn't it? We're going to have to fight them for that fish tile forever.

I think thats a bit of a lousy start location.
17 sea tiles in the first 21?
having a centralized capital will be a pain in the ass?

ouch, what happened?
IIRC Unorthodox is also a news editor but he probably can't write lots of stuff so maybe if someone sends it to him...
Anyways, I can't be on the Government right now.

Perfect time for someone new to start the game. There is no hierarchy built up, nothing complex (it's the start of the game!), and it would be great to see some of you lurkers get into it for a short time. Yes you, I see you there.
Go and nominate yourselves so we can start this game!

I already have. But no response. I doubt it was a mistake. He cancelled my e-mail changed ACS News Editor back to my post rank and disabled my Apolyton Account that can post news.
EDIT: Just got reinstated Someone hacked into my account a e-mailed Dan a rude message with things I could not post here on Poly But still YAY!

About the start location
Excellent!
A new start.
To me it seems that this time we would benefit a lot from moving our settler one tile west and settler there.
Then we would have at least 10 tiles of land. (5 now)
Then again we should scout first to see how much land there is to be found and what kind of terrain there is.
Legend: w=water g=grassland f/j=forest/jungle

And give up the bonus grassland tile?
Perhaps 1 W, 1 SW or something else in the viscinity... we need to send out the scout before deciding where to plant the capital.

We'll get the production bonus out of it anyway...
I think there is a thread about it somewhere out there.
And there might be more bonus grassland tiles under the fog.
But anyway we need to send out the scout first.

I think we'd benefit even more from having another map or at least making some of those sea tiles grassland.

Maybe we'll just have to wait for the news item.
OPD:
Oh come on....
As this is custom map I don't think they made it too unfair. Or did they?

Spain is extremely easy to conquer at almost any point of the game (see Unique Unit). Now we can't even see yet if they are connected by land (I woud assume they are, but that doesn't make it so).
I see this also as a real potential early tech boost, as not only will we be researching alongside spain from the start, but every civ that either of us find, we'll get contact with.

Let's get a GOOD map this time. This one is starting with EXACTLY the problems we had with the old one. TOO CROWDED!!!!!!
If this is the best we can do on a Large map we definitely need to go to Huge.

And wait 10 minutes between turns?
No thanks.
Reduce the number of opponents. Thats my answer.

Don't shout, please.
The old map never had problems with being too crowded per se. The problems were with computer speed. These problems were probably caused by the map size and/or number of civs, not by their density. We decreased both parameters a fair amount. Going back to a huge map could only bring these problem back.
May I also remind you that Togas and I put a lot of effort into this map? We think it'll provide a good challenge, and there is definitely a way to win on it. Furthermore, I would like to remind you that you have only seen 24 tiles yet.
If you can't handle a challenge - please do not spoil it for the others.

Hmm...
Yes indeed, one makes the assumption of us being on the same land mass very easily.
But I don't think they are as it would be too obvious.
Oh well we'll have to wait and see..

I'm thinking found on the starting tile.
We'd waste a shield if moved west and with the Spainish that close, we don't want to lose two turns production right away on the Diety level.
I am thinking that we need an archer rush against the Spainish ASAP.

We found where we're at and immediately begin working on taking out the Spanish.
We don't have to think too much as we only have one direction to expand. So future cities shouldn't be too complicated.

Just kill me now. It would be quicker...
We put in 3 weeks of work into a very challanging, choice-ridden, unique map that should encourage a ton of discussions and debates on several key decisions your team is going to have to make. This map is not easy because easy is not fun. This map is designed to be challenging and engaging. It is filled with choices and surprises that should, hopefully, keep up interest and involvement in the new SPDG.
If you don't like that, then you aren't going to like this game. Cry all you want for something easy, it isn't happening. ***** and moan, it won't change the fact that this map needs Poly's best and brightest to beat it.
If you're not up for the challange, then don't sign up.

Quit you whining. When we discussed problems with the last map, several of the key problems were that the civs were too close and contact with all civs happened very quickly. YOU even agreed with this. Now the first thing we see the FIRST turn is another civ. This leads us to the logical conclusion that that was not addressed. Instead of you and BFM complaining about how you spent 3 weeks working on the map so we are obligated to play it you could simply state that not all the civs are this close. That's all I wanted to hear.
I brought it up because it was a concern and I hoped for an assurance that all of the civs were not jammed within contact of one another like last time as they took a huge element of the game away. It was as issue brought up and I don't like the idea of playing this game for a month only to find we're going to end in the exact same situation.

Ghengis don't make yourself look stupid before you've seen all of the map
If you then think the map is crap then you can whine all you want then
