mark forum as read
After browsing the forums for a while, a problem starts to occur: threads that I've already viewed seem to forget that I've viewed them (even ones where I have the last post). I've found out that if I use "mark all forums as read" it fixes the problem and restarts the timer of doom. However, I can get to this point just by browsing the OT, and I want to keep the info for the other forums. Would it be possible to have one of these links for individual forums, like "mark this forum as read"?

Oh, and how come even when I've read every single thread in the forum, the lightbulb won't go dark?

I hate it when it marks a thread as unread yet the last post in the thread was written by me.

Perhaps your cookie eater gets hungry if you don't visit other sites?

I think the problem is (though I'm completely ignorant about this, I make guesses anyway ) maybe the cookie has limited space, so when I've viewed enough threads it has to forget some to hold new ones.

panag, that doesn't work. Apolyton uses cookies named bbthreadview[95585] to keep track of which threads have been viewed. Your suggestion would make all viewed threads become unviewed. I just tested it so I know.

Interesting. That could mean one of two things:
1. Apolyton has different methods for different browsers.
2. Firebird handles cookies differently.

The cookies which are fed to your computer have a set date of expiry, often less than a few hours. Obviously, the cookies get corrupted or "expire" later on. So, this should happen and is not a Poly problem, merely a cookie problem.
geeslaka
Opera handles the cookies the same way as the Gecko-powered browsers, and I'll bet my bottom dollar that IE does too. I'll just check now...
Yep... if I delete the cookies except the one containing my login details, then all the threads become unviewed (in Opera and IE6). This is exactly what should happen. If your computer has no record of seeing the thread, logic and experimentation dictates that the thread will not have been read, according to the computer

Interesting. We get opposite results when we delete cookies.
I have one cookie for each read thread younger than 6 hours(I think it's close to 6 hours, it could be longer). If I look at a read thread's ID and delete the corresponding cookie, the thread becomes unread.
If I understand you correctly, you have one cookie for each unread thread. When you do as I did, the thread becomes read.
Fascinating.

Are you reading the same post from Frozzy as I am?
Looks to me like when he deletes a cookie, the thread becomes unread, "unviewed", or "not have been read" just like you.

Not really. Software does not have conciousness, but it is configured to a set style. "In many hands, bugs multiply". You do realise that 90% of Windows users don't have the slightest clue what a cookie is, apart from the fact it is also a synonym for a biscuit. Thus, I think Microsoft are going to focus on the 90% instead of the 10%, no? Welcome to basic economics.

Right... this just about nullifies any of the previous statements you have made. The term ceteris paribus comes to mind.
