Now that we're on this cookie topic, I just found out something interesting that many of you probably already know...
apolyton.net and apolyton.com each store their own cookies. I found this out cause someone gave a link to the .com site and when I clicked on it, I found out I wasn't logged in while I was logged into the .net site. So I could browse as a guest while also browsing as a user too.
Now this got me curious and makes me wonder if the .com site could use the cookies form the .net site and vice versa. In other words, why does my browser need to have cookies for both "sites"?

For the record, www.apolyton.net and apolyton.net are two seperate cookies too.
Using the one cookie for all "sites" would be problematic, as the different addresses are considered completely different by your browser. You would have a situation where one website is trying to alter the information in a cookie that is being held by another site and most browsers do not allow that.

www.apolyton.net, apolyton.net, apolyton.com and apolyton.net all give different cookies.
There is no bloody difference in the "situation"!

That is because...
The links do not differ
apolyton.com and apolyton.net both have a link to the forums ( http://apolyton.net/forums).
So that would happen

One supposes so. I am confused by what you are referring to by "e-mails". Anyway, it appears that cookies only appear at http://apolyton.com with the said cookie domain, and not on any more pages, as, previously stated, all links on that said page direct to the "http://apolyton.net" domain.

Ah... you are referring to the "new post notification" feature? Again, this is because the main page links to the http://apolyton.net domain.

Wow, I didn't notice that difference as well. So I have 4 cookies from apolyton right now called: bblastvisit.
Which reminds me, one thing that I hate is when I come to the site, but for some reason or another get distracted, then have my last visit time logout.
So when I come back to view the boards, almost every thread I didn't read has now been marked as read because of my last logout time. For a second I thought that I could use one of the other 3 "sites" to get back my "view last unread post" arrow to view the thread, but alas, it doesn't work that way.

Wouldn't it be possible to manually rename the cookie?

Don't think that would help. I believe last login is kept on the Database side and once you've been timed out, your last login time is changed. No way to get back to the previous logout time and get back the "unread" threads you just lost.

If they're threads that you've previously posted in, there's always "My Threads".

Sure, but it's not knowing what threads have new posts that matter to me, or what posts I've posted in, it's that little "go to first unread post" image that is available when the thread is unread that isn't available when the thread is read that I care about.
I use that link very often to quickly get to the latest post, in this case yours instead of clicking on the last page or the thread itself which takes me to the top of the page I requested which forces me to scroll down the thread and try and find where I left off.
It's not something that I can do anything about, nor is it something that has a solution at this time. It could, but I don't think my beef is big enough or has enough people in the same boat to warrant the need for said solution.

There does seem to be something wrong with the new threads feature. I mean I often see threads where I was the last poster but it's still marked as unread.

I get that all the time. When I have posted to a thread, it's marked red, instead of yellow.
