New computer *gloat, gloat*
At last I have replaced my Athlon 700 system which I have been saying I was going to do for a while but never quite got around to. Well I was feeling rich and compelled yesterday, so I went and bought all the bits and put it together:
Pentium IV 3000MHz (800MHz FSB)
1GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM
MSI Neo2 motherboard (look it up if you want more info )
GeForceFX 5900 ( )
160GB 7200rpm HDD
Not bad, not bad I haven't bought a new monitor yet...I want 22" but it wouldn't fit on my desk, so I will have to wait until I get a place of my own and a bigger desk. My nephew will be getting my cast-offs as he wants a computer...(he's only 5 )

Of course I want one... But not enough to pay for it . I currently have a P3 600.
What are you going to use it for that your athlon 700 couldn't do ?
I guess you found a job then?

Damn fast, but then again, so is everything else
Yeah, I do have a job, and I seem to have quite a few potential jobs in the pipeline which pay considerably better than this one So I thought 'why not?'...and I bought this system...it cost about £1000 itself, but as I said, I still need another monitor (this is certainly not a bad monitor, a 17" FST).

What kind of an idiot will pay through his nose to get a P4 3.0GHz now?

It is the 3.2GHz that is extortionate...I've always done that, got the second fastest processor...a P200MMX when P233MMX was the fastest, a Athlon 700 when the 750 was the fastest and now a 3GHz when a 3.2GHz is the fastest. I am prepared to pay a decent amount, but I just don't warrant the cost of the very fastest...
...Besides, (1)Boys and toys and (2)I'm a little more pragmatic here. I bought an Athlon because they were the quickest back then. Simple fact is, they are not now, and it is especially misleading with that silly + rating thing which should have been dead and buried years ago...

...and (3)It is cheaper than an Athlon 3200+ despite actually been faster

You silly git.
If I were you, I'd wait for the AMD 64 to launch. That certainly will cause price cuts in P4's.
Anyway, gloating over a wintel box is almost as bad as saying "my penis is bigger than yours."

Depends on what problems the 64's come out with, and how big the market is for 64 bit processors to be saddles with 32 bit peripheral devices running 32 bit apps on a 32 bit OS.

Yeah, and then something else will come out, and something after that, and something after that...you can wait forever more, you have to jump in at some point. It is pointless deliberating on what the next technology to come out will be, because when that comes out something else will be due which will cut the prices of those...

No, the price cuts on the P4s won't come until a week or so before the P5 launch on October 26th.
Besides, Athlon 64 benchmarks are certainly less than impressive. They're going to hype "hey, it's 64-bits! Who cares if the OS to take advantage of 64-bits won't be out for another 6 months and the fact that 99.9999% of your code is 32-bit???"
Not to mention the ever-growing lost of errata on AMD's webpage, at 100 and rising. Compare that to, say, Intel's Centrino, which has 4 errata and all were fixed before shipping silicon.

Man, the Wildcat sucks ass for anything but professional work.
It doesn't even run most games.

If I want to run games, I'll get a toy comp for running games.
If I want to do professional work, I'll get the equipment for it.

Well it is more pragmatic than that. The Athlon 700 was a great chip, very stable and good performer, and back then AMD was the best buy. At the moment, they are not. The P4-3000 is cheaper than the 3200+ yet actually quicker, and the associated peripherals for the AMD chip costs more. For my range, AMD were not competitive. If the situation is back to where it was when I bought my previous system (4 years ago), it will be a different matter...
