Hey, now, DrSpike! My question was well-intentioned, but you're just trying to stir up sibling rivalry now, aren't you?!

rah and Ming seem inseparable to me. I wouldn't wonder if they even lived on the same street.
BTW, rah....do you and Ming live in suburban Chicago, or in the city proper?

Northern suburbs. We live in the same burb, but our older brother actually lives closer to me than Ming does.

Yeah, but it's nice that we all live so close together. The nieces and nephews get to see each other often, and we all get to get together to play golf.

Just think about how it might help things if they got rid of post count entirely.

I don't mind about post counts, and the custom avatars are not that relevant to me either, but since those things already are part of this site, then they should remain here.
But if the admins want to take them out, fine with me. Whatever.

Did it in the OT when posts stopped counting there?
[/rhetorical]
The places where posts not counting would cut the quantity are likely going to be in the places where people can currently spam unnoticed, or legally. Mentioning no names of course.

I think it did, but no scientific research to prove it.
You did stop seeing as many threads that consisting of 100's of one word responses.

So if they did stop counting posts in this forum, would that mean Skanky Burns' wouldn't post as much?

Less relevant? That would be a challenge given his preference for

I think instead of avatar post dependance, it might be a time dependance. Wait thirty days and you can have an avatar. Yay
I wish to get rid of post counts.

Another way of handling it could be to remove any postcount related titles. That would remove the incentive to spam with the intent of getting +1's, without removing the postcount as such.

What would be the point of having a post count? When I am looking for advice on something to do with a CIV game, then the guy who has "diety" under his name gets a bit more scruitiny than the guy who has "settler".
Likewise, when we are talking about the community here, I pay more attention to the same because I know he has been around here a while and should be closer in touch with the pulsebeat of this community. If a "settler" starts saying change this and change that, is anyone going to really listen? If a "diety" does it then it at least gets a good read and a little thought from me. I think that post counts and titles are a good thing. One of the reasons we have mods with PCR power is to make sure that a spammer doesn't reach those levels simply through spamming.

The owners want to limit spam. But they like high traffic. Look how they brag when they get it. It is a bit of a Catch 22.

Sure they like high traffic... and yes, they want to limit spam. Those two ideas can work together. They truely want the "right" kind of traffic. This is a gaming site... and that's what it was intended to be.

They can sometimes conflict... But both Mark and Dan have made it pretty clear that the on topic forums are the more important to them. Which makes sense, since it is a gaming site
