Hey that was on topic, because it was addressed at Rah's previous (also on topic) post. If you are discussing why posts count here, all points _about_ spam (so they are merely metaspam and not spam) are of course relevant to the debate.
You just need to think a little more laterally.

The truest post in this thread.
So we'll put this thread on spam alert also.
More RAH math may be in order.

The way this thread is going, every word has to be weighed carefully, before posted, which is okay.....to a point.
We don't want to get rid of spontaneity, do we? I mean, if poster X says something, you should still be able to adress his post in a witty way. Even though your one-liner may technically be off-topic.
The way I see it, there are two considerations to take:
1 - The particular thread in question. Too many one liners, and witty remarks do in fact turn a thread into a spam fest. These should therefore be allowed, but posters should be aware that they can become subject of moderation, should the threade degenerate.
2 - The poster in question. Obviously this is for the mods to decide. But I imagine that a poster with a spammer reputation would find it harder to post in a thread that is in danger of becoming a spam fest, than a poster that almost always post on topic posts.
I a fully aware that Apolyton is not a democracy, and that I have absolutely no say in these matters, whatsoever, but I felt that this thread had moved towards a discussion about "where the line is". Therefore the above words

Metaspam is posting solely for the reason of pointing out that a post is spam. One mark against counting posts here.

Yes, it was a term I coined to characterise the behaviour of BC, the now elusive metaspam master.
Of course, ordinarily metaspam is just clever spam, but in this thread we are discussing the hows and whys of posts counting here, so I think metaspam (but not spam) is on topic, to a certain extent.
It seems there are a lot of shades of opinion here on whether posts should count, and, if so whether the modding of this forum should change. Maybe a poll would be in order.

Uhhhh.... Dr Spike... No, a poll isn't in order.
This is not a democracy. The owners made their decision that posts won't count in the OTF. So they don't. It's that simple. The decision was made knowing full well that members would be against it... A new poll isn't going to make them change their minds. Especially since there is now probably more support of their position than there was when the decision was originally made

I am not saying anything about OT posts at all. I reread it and I think my post is clear on that.
And besides..........I know it is not a democracy (how could I forget that? ). I am not serious about the poll, I was just indicating my surprise at the gamut of opinions on the issue we are discussing here, which is not whether OT posts should count, though some have made points on that related issue.

My first impression was that it would be cool to have two different systems of rank. One for On topic and one for Off topic. Then Ming's earlier post about this being a site for gamers really hit home. That is what Apolyton is really all about and that is what brought most of us here. This is a site about gamers for gamers and owned by gamers. The off topic is provided for us to maintain and grow our community by providing a forum to express other items of interest to us. A good thing to be sure, but not 'Poly's mission.
We are Gamers who like to talk. When we talk about the games then its +1...when we talk about something else then it shouldn't give the +1 to a level used to determine your contribution to a GAMING COMMUNITY.
Posting in this forum should be counted as it is designed to add to the GAMING COMMUNITY and make it a better experience for all. This cannot be said of the Off Topic.

That quote is from Ming's post which misinterpreted what was being said here. Now I pretty much agree with Plato's post above, but others (like Chris, who started the thread) clearly don't. I'd presume you also agree with Plato's reasoning............is that right?

Uh, no one's suggesting we get rid of OT. Where else could folks debate whether your presence is vital?

The OT is vital to Apolyton. It give the gamers somewhere to go inbetween new games/releases.
Otherwise I'm sure that some people wouldn't have stuck around.

Look at all the +1s in my thread, and that sad sack Mark didn't bother to answer my question!
BTW, I co-invented the democ games that some of you have such a bonner for, and there was no need to spam for those either.
And no Mr Rabbit, I am no mod, nor would I ever be again, one time elsewhere I agreed to that, NEVER again.
