RIAA offers file-sharers amnesty!
Music Biz to Give File Sharers Amnesty
The Recording Industry Assn. of America plans to announce an amnesty program this week that will let individual online copyright infringers off the hook if they change their ways, sources say.
The amnesty program would apply only to alleged infringers who have not been sued by the music industry trade group or identified by Internet service providers as a result of the trade group's subpoena process. Alleged commercial pirates will not receive amnesty.
According to sources, the RIAA will not pursue legal action if infringers delete all unauthorized music files from their computers, destroy all copies (including CD-Rs) and promise not to upload such material in the future. Each infringing household member will have to send a completed, notarized amnesty form to the RIAA, with a copy of a photo ID. Those who renege on their promise will be subject to charges of willful copyright infringement.
The amnesty program will be revealed at about the same time the RIAA is expected to announce the filing of "several hundred" infringement suits.
The RIAA had no comment.
from yahoo news
---------------------------
Anyone here going to take advantage of this generous offer? Of course, they only promise that the RIAA will not sue them, not various third parties. Oh, and the whole photo-ID bit, hillarious! Me thinks they are getting desperate.

Umm..the threat's more real than you people think. The FBI raided a house down the street from me just yesterday, but the guy managed to hurl his computer out the window before they got upstairs. Turns out he was arrested for selling recreational drugs of a sort but at least they didn't get him for the .mp3 crap, you know?

The funny thing about this is that by signing this, you essentially sign your souls over to the RIAA forever. Apparently there are harsh consequences if you "renege" on the terms of the agreement. So, you are basically allowing the RIAA to watch you forever for no benefit that couldn't be gained from simply not sharing RIAA files anymore. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Anyone dumb enough to fall for this deserves to be forever out of the filesharing culture. Probably the same idiots who go around opening all those virus e-mails.

Amnesty? Amnesties are pardons, they're not some sort of 'backspace' action for your crimes. What kind of twisted amnesty is this then? Amnestied file sharers should get to keep their files and CD Rs and the RIAA shouldn't make them sign anything.

It's the kind of twisted amnesty that benefits the RIAA and screws whoever signs it.

sorry, just the idea of the guy tossing his computer out if they were busting him for drugs.
in any case, i have some extremely powerful magnets; all the files i want to keep (documents, pictures, and saved game files) are safe on backup cds.
i can understand why this guy wanted to destroy evidence. this is a war. one which i doubt the riaa can truly win; even if they did, it would surely be a pyrrhic victory.

Wonder if they would even bother trying to go after classical downloads. I mean, considering how many different recordings there are of every piece of classical music, how could they tell which recording it was?

Uh, so it's "closer than we think" because the FBI made a drug raid on a neighbor of yours? Am I the only one not following the chain of reasoning here?

It's not an amnesty, it's an unconditional surrender. We surrender our CD-Rs and mp3s, and we get...ummm----nothing, other than getting the RIAA's attention towards future "infringements", that's pretty much it.
Explains why few people will accept this...

There was actually a poster which said "When you share files, you're downloading terrorism!"

that doesn't make too much sense.. when you share, you're uploading files, so you'd be uploading terrorism?

You got it!
Now do you understand why sharing files is so evil? You're aiding and abetting Al Queda! Why, those very same files that are uploading from your computer could be going straight to Usamas laptop!

If Osama is downloading my Mahler files, I'll be pissed!
On a more serious note, I have considered renaming some of my gay porn videos just to have fun with some unsuspecting folks. Would it be wrong to rename "Bare-Assed Boys in the Barn" to "Left Behind" or "Jesus Saves" or the like?
