Play the World, CD Not Recognised, Patch 1.27
Hi Finially got some time to myself! so just bought the Play the World Expansion...
Discovered that "for some reason" when using the latest PTW patch (1.27) the cd sitting in my drive is not recognised, computer stating insert cd...
thru process of elimination ive worked out 1.21 doesnt do this...
is there a way to fix using the 1.27 patch and getting it to recognise the cd?? it seems to be a general problem (read some other things about it on here) but cant seem to find an answer....
im going to use 1.21 for the time being, but dont know where that will stand me with multiplayer etc....
anyways, any advices for a civ "oldie/newbie" appreciated

Welcome to the great patch problem. Civ3 was easy, only one version. PTW has US and UK (european) versions as well as those for specific languages.
If the original installation of PTW starts with a "Safedisk - Macrovision" screen it is a euro version, if the copy protection is Securecom it is US. Make sure you have the correct patch.
If you definitely have the right patch and it is still not working then you have a more complicated problem. In that case there is little else you can do except email Infogrames/Atari support with the details of the problem.
Unless someone here knows more.

Not doubting you, but....
You do have the right patch? About 7MB? (the US patch is larger). I got my copy from infogrames.co.uk rather than anywhere else.

yep, was about 7mb.....got it from the civ site....uk one......its very infuriating hehe....will have to email infogrames i guess, but u tend to get disheartened at doing that when youve been pcing for a while ....
mind u, the other patch seems to be working fine...probably some exploits still included as well lol....so i guess there are benefits....

Infogrames tech support will send you a different patch if you ask.
And if they fail google is the way to go

thanks m8
yep, tried infogrames, and must say they were very quick and helpful!
problem solved....it turned out i have the US version of the game, even though purchased in a UK strore of PC World, odd....
The US patch doesnt throw up the no disc error for me!
woot!
ps for peoples reference heres extract from the very helpful young eric of infogrammes mail :-
To check which version you have look at the front of the CD and make note of the serial number
1007417 is European/UK
1007417/2 is US

I have the US version of Civ III (Limited Edition) and a UK version of PTW. Until I tried to install patch 1.27 it worked fine. Now I get the 'Insert CD in the Drive' type error message.
I don't really understand the need for the different versions of the game when we live in such a diverse and accessible world. Computer code is not exactly culturally sensitive is it?

No, but language is and some either do not understand English or wish to not have to deal with it, hence versions for other locations.
I thought they have resolved the insert CD issues, but maybe not, I use a virtual drive and never load it.

I am not suggesting that the game come out only in English just that there could be one English language version.
And no, the issue doesn't seem to have been solved but maybe will by Conquests. I live in hope. By the way, what's a 'virtual' drive?
