The Iron Chef
I've heard the show is a huge hit in the US.
So much, that it was included as an easter egg in WarCraft III.
An Israeli channel has recently acquired it and started showing it. The show is absolutely hilarious
You watch funny japanese people turning cooking into a "Professional Wrestling" like contest.
It sets up (rather poor) drama, tension, story line, and makes live commentary on the cooking process, with court-side reporters (what is this? soccer?)
Rarely have I watched a show so hilarious and silly.
Anyone else watches it?

I've watched it on the food network from time to time. It's actually much more entertaining then any cooking show has a right to be.

The airing of The Iron Chef ceased here some months ago, but from what I saw, I must agree with you. The music taken from broken arrow/gladiator in the beginning is absolutely hilarious.
After some time though the show gets a little repetitive and the english dubbing gets annoying.

The people at my office thought it was amazing that Iron Chef (Riori Tetsujin) is the biggest cooking show in America. Had a good conversation about it after that, in which I discovered that Japanese people don't like Masaharu Morimoto as much as Americans. Both nations, however, recognize the superior skill of Chen Kenichi.

Btw, I'm positively sure that the schollar professor judge character is planted by the production. His remarks are too idiotic. He could criticize one person and congratulate another on the same thing.
Ecth - I was reffering to the "annoyed" sounds that all creatures make after you click them alot. Some creature (can't tell who now) after you pester him long enough, makes a parody of Iron Chef.
There are also parodies of the Simpsons, batman, monty python, ricky lake, american pie, and many many more.
And what's wrong with this avatar?

It's interesting that the Japanese have made such a name for themselves in cooking as most of their food is comparatively bland. But I love it, anyway.

What do they think of Sakai? Sakai is my favorite.

Japanese food might be more exciting if they used anything other than dashi, miso or soy sauce for flavor.
I'm not complaining, however. It makes learning to cook here pretty easy for me.

I love Iron Chef, but we didn't get the Food Network here in FL, so I haven't seen it in years.

Sakai -
"Background: Sakai is known as a lady killer in Japan and he is often called the "Delacroix of French cuisine" because of the beautiful way in which his dishes are presented.* Sakai is a member of* the Club des Trente, an organization of French chefs in Japan (there is another group of younger chefs, Club Mistral, who have been on the show and challenged Sakai a few times). The Club des Trente also has, in its membership, retired French Iron Chef Ishinabe and many of the French chefs who have been challengers on Iron Chef are also members, including Jo Etsuo (Battle Wine).*"

That doesn't answer my question...
We talked about Morimoto, Kenichi and the Iron Chef that loses all the time. Can't remember if that's Sakai or the Italian chef.
edit: The Italian chef is the loser...

Here in California there are a number of excellent Japanese-California fusion restaurants which really improve the quality of the food. In fact most of the Asian cuisines have blended with western cooking and the results are A+.

kwe-san!
(Fukui-san)
I love the show. In fact, I find it highly entertaining, from the yellow pepper that Kaga seems to readily enjoy at the beggining of each show to when the challenger gets screwed by the biased panel of unqualified judges who wouldn't know Italian food if it bit them in the ass... They all seem to want Japanesse food, even if they are cooking French food...
Anyway.

Seconded. Second biggest douche in the known universe, after John Edwards.
