hmmm, $10,000 a week to write US sitcoms versus cultural purity.

$10,000 a week and brain damage. The pressure within that system is mindboggling. Scripts can be completely rewritten two or three times between the first readthrough and taping five days later. The rewriting is done overnight. The constant, ongoing demand is to produce funny material under the direst circumstances. That's why, if you watch the credits on a show like "The Simpsons", you'll notice completely new Writer/Producer names every season. That's why they're paid so much - they burn out. That's why there are so many on-screen Producer credits at the start of American sitcoms, they're all mainly the writers who do all the rewriting. And if anything ever goes wrong, who gets shafted first? And if the star has a tantrum, who gets shafted? And if you get shafted, there are at least 3000 other aspiring types desperate for your job. There are 4000+ fully professional TV writers in LA alone, about 2500 on the East Coast. In this country, there are maybe 75 fully professional TV writers, and about half that number whom you can rely on to produce the goods.
Case closed.

The problem with sitcom writing in this country is that there's no history or culture of it. Added to which, there is absolutely no money invested in trying to develop same. Any sitcoms attempted here are expected to be developed in 3 weeks and written in 10 days. Added to which, our humour is entirely different from that of the Americans, so it's arguable that trying to write sitcoms - as the Americans have defined them - is a futile exercise anyway. Our strength is in the style of people like John Clarke, who did "The Games", et al.

I might or might not be around tonight. We have a wedding to attend. Depends what time it wraps up. By which I mean the reception. I expect the marriage to wrap up within about six months.

Finbar should write a sitcom about a group of nutty gamers who travel great distances just to have dinner.

I'm not nutty, more fruity.
And I'm finding that other game involving deity and ras compelling reading.

Why can't us Aussies get a good diplo going some time?
Maybe if we finish some of our games we could!

Added to which, the warmonger - I'd been toying with making that plural, but couldn't muster the evidence to support the plural - in our midst quickly reduces a Diplo game to just another typical Civ game anyway.

Horse and Makeo are the true war mongers.
finbar and deity are essentially peace mongers although deity is occassionally mis-undestood.
hydey swings both ways.
Raz is a diplo war monger.
Trev is peaceful builder but retaliates quickly in war.
