Same here, but I was at work so I couldn't post about it earlier. Either way...
In honour of this momentous occassion I have updated the tables and graphs I posted a while ago about the history of this statistic. (Note: these stats are sometimes based on educated guesses so I don't guarantee their accuracy, but they shouldn't be off by much.)

More likely it's the aftermath of the combo of 3 new games (RoN, GalCiv, MoO3) and the announcement of Civ3:Conquests.

Good, good. Those graphs does something to freshening up a what would usually be a deja-vu thread! I was amazed by seing that we were around 7000-8000 memebers when I registered! Guess things are going faster than I thought it did...

Well... congratulations to everyone . 40k, that's really a lot of users, even though few are used regularly.

About 6500.
Edit: That is, to post with. At least some people only use their accounts to be able to see attachments, vote on polls, review Directory files, read the forums when guests are being blocked due to traffic, etc... I don't know how many of such people there are, but they exist.

Has the average of about 1000 active posters a day changed significantly?

We should send an email to all posters (or all posters with no posts that registered more than a week ago) and any who don't reply that they want to keep the account, delete.

Good work AH!
Seems the growth rate after RON has started to level. Let's hope Settler 2 can keep up.

And after the effort of sending this mass-email (spam, if you will) to everyone registered, and then compiling a list of everyone who did reply, the admins then carefully delete those who did not respond. This must be done very carefully, as selecting the poster above or the poster below will likely remove someone here who is active.
Then, after all that effort, the benefit this site receives is . . . ?

It's likely that an easier script for the kind of thing would be possible. But the whole thing just seems icky, and even if there is a script it wouldn't be worth writing it--you only have to have so much database space per dead login. (In addition, the more posters we have, the more "established" people will think we are, even if only a tenth of those posters are active.)

Thats the point though. No matter how great a programmer you are, you still won't be able to beat no risk and no effort, which is what just leaving these names alone will take.

Another way of doing could be to delete all posters/logins who have not logged on to Apolyton in the last two years.
But the benefit would be minimal, since the vast majority of posters have registered during the last two years.
I say leave it alone

Poly has increased sevenfold since I registered. I still remember when Geography Dan posted the 6000 thread.
I complement Locotus on his nice graphs.
