Just thought of something. Locotus, could you make a best-fit exponential curve to approximate when we'll reach 100K?

Deleting some users comes up in every one of these threads, yet strangely noone has ever come up with an argument that withstood scrutiny as to why it would be beneficial.

Deleting nonfunctioning users would save space. Wouldn't that be beneficial?

The benefits have been described as very small to none, and the hassle would be far larger.

But it would be Mark and Dan's hassle, wouldn't it?

Yes, and do you really want them diverting scarce time away from things that do matter to us?

Deleting users would allow people to use usernames that they want instead of becoming "John3987397" or something of that sort

Hey, if apolyton ever started losing traffic, the email idea might be a good idea to increase traffic and get people back. (not with any deletion threat, but as just a "hey, we still exist" sort of message)

This is probably the best argument I have ever seen for deleting posters.

Thats better handled on a case-by-case basis. Tass wants to use an already registered name, Ming has said he will delete the old poster and give Tass his name if the old poster doesn't show up in x amount of time.

I don't think it would take to much time to delete old users. All you have to do is write a program that automatically deletes any users which haven't logged in in a year or two.

Yeah, but the benefits of doing such would have to outweigh the effort of programming it, and the risk that you don't accidently delete active users.

But people might get discouraged from registering if they, for example, type
"caesar"----> REJECTED IN USE
"caesar augustus"----> REJECTED IN USE
"caesar caligula"----> REJECTED IN USE
"the caesar"----> REJECTED IN USE
and so on...
I know I get discouraged when my usernames are continually taken...
deleting anyone who hasn't accessed the site since this date in 1999 would be a good policy... they've had a good 3 years... if they had wanted to come back- they would have

But if you're a new user, trying to register, you probably don't know Ming

EDIT: But yeah...I agree with you, it's not worth the hassle.

As you can see in the current graph, the growth rate is almost entirely dependent on the release of new games, so that would be near impossible. But at our current rate of 15 days/1000 logins, we should hit 100k in 900 days (on 9 March 2006). A more predictable number would be 50k, which we should at our current rate hit next February (18 February 2004, using 15 days/1000 logins).

Hotmail has about 50 million active users in the US alone (so probably well over 100 million worldwide) and is still going strong, so I don't think Apolyton has too much to worry about in the near future

I think us vets should get extra rights, such as no flood control etc...

Why? If one post often than every 15 sec, one don't have much to say, have one? That could also give more dp's...

To be honest you have to struggle to post twice in 30 seconds anyway, unless you put no thought into your posts.

nope, I did own 5542 for some time though. it ws my actual handle. until it got eaten by forum engine. then 5541 (my first attempt to create a handle) was renamed by Markos and I got a new password. plus, post count restored. (900ish at that point)

But hotmail is more necessary for people htan Apolyton... apolyton is fun- Hotmail is a necessary mail server. people are more likely to be discouraged by a game site than an email site
(and hotmail provides suggestions on other names for its users to pick; apolyton does not.)
