DC,
If people really care that little, do we even want them here in the first place?
Plus, out of all the millions and millions of possible names to choose from, is it really that hard to come up with a good one that's not already taken? I tested this myself just now: without putting much thought into it, I wrote down 12 possiblities for usernames I might pick if I were to register now (the only criterium I used was that they should be fairly different, not just variations on the same theme). Then I checked with the database to see which ones were and weren't already in use. 10 of the 12 names I came up with are still available. I listed all names below and as you can see, the 2 names that are already taken are pretty common words. Anyone who puts even the slightest bit of imagination into the choosing of their handle shouldn't run into more than 1 double.
The names I picked that are still open:
Wouter
Commander Keen
Eleven of Twelve
Captain Kirk
Master of Disaster
Your Imaginairy Friend
King Kong
Sudebei
Apedemak
Morey Striker
The names that have already been taken:
Archer
Spike
(Note: One could still register with these by adding something extra, like Royal Archer, Archer1, The Archer, Johathan Archer, Wooden Spike, Captain Spike, Bloody Spike, Spike Lee, etc -- all those options (and many more) are still available)

Sure...that goes for these names. But take me as an example:
I am Asmodean. I am Asmodean here, and I am Asmodean at all other other forums that I am or ever were registered on on the internet. If in some instance I came to Apolyton today to register, and find Asmodean already taken, I would go for Asmodean_dk since I am from Denmark.
But in that case it would really make me angry to find out that Asmodean was some German who had registered 1½ years ago, but never made a post.

Asmodean,
Sure, if you want to use the same name in many places, you better make sure it's damn unique, and even then it's usually just a matter before someone else comes up with the same idea. That's not a problem limited to Apolyton.
When I first started to use Locutus it was pretty much unique as well. I was the only Locutus on ICQ and Usenet, the name was free on all forums, chatrooms, mail servers, etc. Now there's a gazillion other Locuti out there, so many it's not fun anymore. I've actually started to use other nicknames now (I've actually used Your Imaginairy Friend (or YIM) a couple of times). Yes, it's annoying if on other boards Locutus is already registered but not used, but that's a problem inherent to my name, not that site.
Ah yes, totally forgot DrSpike would be a good alternative for Spike as well, though I heard rumours that's already been taken
(I was actually thinking of Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Bloody Spike was the best I could come up with (William the Bloody might be a better alternative))

To be honest you have to struggle to post twice in 30 seconds anyway, unless you put no thought into your posts.

Nice of you to share your trade secrets, Dr. Spike.
Yeah, I know what you mean by the logins, I wanted to chop off the 18 from obiwan18 but someone had taking the name a mere 2 months before I made my request.
But the alternative has worked out just fine as Ben Kenobi.

For the record I've only ever seen the 30 second message a handful of times, usually when the site is running slowly as well. After all, it takes time to post as wittily as I do.

I get it sometimes, when I'm hungover
If my hands are shaky, I'll sometimes inadvertently double-click the "post reply" button.

But not much, you being so skilled, that the wit just flows off the keyboard.
I'll admit that I have seen the 30 second flood control, but only when posting offtopic.

You just type too damn slowly!
I got the flood control thing this morning, and my second reply was a whole sentence too, not just a smilie. A sentence!
It helps to have multiple windows open at the same time though - no waiting for a page to load before you next reply is on its way.

Civ3 caused an even bigger increase. We need civ4!
BTW: why have the civ3 forums been moved down on the forum page? The civ3 forums should be on top!

To my knowledge my name is unique so I don't have to worry about going to a forum and finding another person has already registered it.

I have six names that I'm reasonably sure are unique.
In the extremely unlike chance that my first choice is taken, I just try one of the others.

Spot the spike in new arrivals between 28 and 29 thousand. Do you know what happened then?
I'm guessing a certain thread about Finland may have been involved.

Yes, Locutus should add the evil Finland thread to the graphs. I remember the location poll around the same time, more Finns than any other country

Just did a little playing around with the numbers in the members function. Am I correct in seeing that only around 750 or so members have 275 or more posts?
That is only 1.875% of the membership. Hmm.
I wonder if it is possible to send a blast e-mail to all members that C3C is available soon and inviting them to come back and post?

Cool graphs!!
I wonder how many active users are on the board though. Do numbers exist there?
Or maybe this sql statement should do the trick:
SELECT count(username) from usertable WHERE lastlogin > date('1-8-2003','dd-mm-yyyy') AND created < date('1-8-2003','dd-mm-yyyy');
(if date and greater/less operators are compatible)
would show how many users have last logged in since August 1st 2003 excluding accounts that have been created since then.

so many apolytoners, yet so few actual people who seem to be palying (based on numbers in the civgroups)
are most just off topic posters and never paly, or do so many not see the need to join the groups !!!
