Atlast! I never would have guessed that game, but thank the maker our suffering is now over.
Nice screenshots Cap TVK - it looks like an adventure game in the vein of monkey Island(point + click) - nice eyeball, nice plot.
Go Spaced Cowboy Go!

We need a "growing old" smilie that ages to an elderly old man, dies and disintigrates to dust.

Is that a quote from the game? Cause that sounds awfully familiar for some reason.

You would not say it, but you might do it. I could give easier clues, but that would be no fun.
Late 80's
Bizzaro adventure game.
"Dude, I had to sell my arm"
The main character could be called a version (add a word and change a tense) of my login name.

I do remember this game I can almost see the box it came in.
Unfortunately the box title is fuzzy.
I think "Space Cowboys" is part of the title, like Space Cowboys of the Starlanes are something similiar.
Then again I could be completely lost, again.......

That is the one! We have a winner!
1. Late 80's
2. Bizzaro adventure game.
3. "Dude, I had to sell my arm" (You had to sell body parts for cash sometimes).
4. The main character could be called a version (add a word and change a tense) of my login name. (Cyber Space Cowboy)
5. "In a world, where Toyota went wrong." (Japanese companies ruled this world)
6. You do know jack. In fact, you are into jacking. (Yes my friend, jack in).
7. Higher versions of your "tools" are better. (Software, not hardware, Buck)
8. Based on a popular book. (Yes it is.)

It was clue no.6 and 8 that did it for me. Man, I'm on a roll... Too bad there isn't a weakest link version for game afficiados.
The real problem is that I have to come up with another game riddle again

I admire your resolve to start with the challenge
Rest assured, you will get your revenge
But one should know how to pass the time
As nothing is better than making it rhyme
So much to your chagrin
I prefer to give my audience a grin
