Aaarrrggghhh ... !!!
"Shall we declare war on the Barbarians, sire?"

Now this was a real no brainer as three barb pirate legions had landed next to Laraville (all stacked on one flatland square - phew - and I had a cohort of trusty charioteers to see them off). So I sent out instructions as to the order of battle and made smug plans regarding the future of the barb trireme sat on the shore behind the pirate horde.

But WTF ...

"You are overruled by the Senate. Action cancelled."

Now this is taking peaceful purposes TOO far. FAR too far.

Jeez, the things this game does to you.

WTF indeed! This is a new one on me - I have seen the "... declare war ..." on occasion and even the "Barbarians discover ...", but never have I been forced to endure a barbarian incursion by my Senate - but then, in all fairness, I do tend to have a Synod more frequently than a Senate

I believe this question comes up when the barbs own a city somewhere, and have not attacked you since they captured it.

It sounds like time to dissolve the senate! Send the lot of them off to the field to "discuss pertinent issues" with the barbarians. The politburo understands that one should shoot first, ask questions later. Odd situation, indeed...

This is hysterical!

I never heard of such a thing! Believe it or not, I hope this happens to me some day so I can enjoy a good laugh (not to mention seeing it with my very own eyes).

Tee-hee. It's the perfectly logical conclusion to an unusual set of circumstances. I'm surprised it hasn't happened more often. The closest I've come to the situation was in a duel. I came across one of my opponent's units for the first time, I was under a Republic government, and my Senate wouldn't let me attack. Which rather undermined the notion of a duel. My opponent, to his credit, disbanded his unit.

I did have one time the americans sneak attacked, took one of my cities, and offered peace, all on their turn. I refused, of course, and THE SENATE OVERRULES ME!! I didn't get a chance to retaliate!

So although I haven't had that happen with barbs, I can relate.

Build the U.N. and see if they join!

Sorry, but I can't help but smile about this!

If it's an oedo year coming up, you're in luck, though. Revolt, kick butt, and when the Senate is back from vacation, peacefully continue from where you left off.

Naaahhh. You're under-rating the irritation.

You see when you get overruled the unit's move orders are cancelled and you don't get the movement point back. So my trusty chariot was paralysed and could not attack whether I dumped the imbecile Senate or not. I could have got a unit of horse to the city but the ride would have been a long one and I didn't rate their valiant (no doubt) but tuckered out chances high enough to justify the period in anarchy.

So I lost the chariot and then the city.

I did, however, get my diplo out and the subsequent bribe back cost was not extortionate.

I had time, before the sack, to dispatch a Senatorial enquiry to Laraville, to write a report on the state of the city's defences.

The Senate is smaller now and ,I think, more pursuaded of the old adage about the best means of defence.

Yes, the missing move after the canceled attack is a drag.

But I thought you would have more attack units inside the city?

I always TRY to keep two attack units inside the city and sometimes these are not enough...

My fullest sympathy now!

Just when you think you're ready for anything, this game manages to throw a new curveball.

I still have to smile a bit, though, because long ago barbarians were about to take a city I had just completed a crucial wonder in. Being in a hurry to get it, I had put off defending the city. As the barbarian approached, I said to myself, "I'll just pay him off so he won't do his worst." This one never asked for gold! Up until that happened, it had been the best start I had ever had in the game. I, too, came back later with a diplomat with some sacks of gold, but ...
