For some odd reason, I suck at ALL FPS except Quake series and Half life Mods.

Actually, Starfox is a prime example of a 'shoot em up'. You are moved through the play field at a rate out of your control and must dodge obsticles and shoot things as they apear.

Don't forget System Shock and System Shock 2! Both were truely ground-breaking games, and had spooky atmospheres that other FPS and RPGs can't match.

No, games that involve rodents flying spacecraft are jokes. As are most games found on Nintendo platforms.
I'm still sticking with Wolf3D. The one and only.

Dude, leave Starfox alone. The original was an almighty cool game.

I find 2 kinds of gamers extremlyannoying.
1. Gaphic too obsessed gamers. You can give the ****tiest game in the world but if it looks pretty they'll praise it. OTOH if the game has the best gameplay but done in 320X240, they'll **** talk the game to death.
2. Gamers who care too much about the image that the game/character portrays. There's too many of those in my favorite game, soul calibur II. Fanboys going "OMG OMG SPAWN OWNZ JOO HE GOT A KICK ASS AXE AND HARDCORE BAD ASS LOOKS" and "Link SuCkS, hE iS tEh GaY TitE wEaRiN eLf... etc"
Who the **** cares if the game has rodents piloting the plane? It was the most fun game for snes. I dont think Wolf3D would be automatically craptastic if u were shooting rodents not nazis. Oh wait, it would have. Cause only thing good about Wolf 3D was that you got to shoot nazis. Gameplay sucked, AI was retarded and way too easily abusable and it was waaaaaaay too easy.
P.S Link does suck

They're just frickin pictures in the corner of the screen. Not a reason to dismiss the game as a joke.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein was good on PC, but sucked big time on PS2. Crappy interface, 'nuff said. I think the console pad will never top the keyboard and mouse for shooter ergonomics.

1. Vietcong (The chit-chat and yelling and screaming from your AI team mates is more entertaining than you could possibly imagine. Plus the game is very realistic.)
2. Ghost Recon (This game has to be played to fully appreciate just how good it is.)
3. Deus Ex (A lot of story and variabilty make this game thoroughly enjoyable. The stealth aspects were the best in any game I played and enjoyed.)
4. Doom (This game, more than any other, was a true breakthrough. It was endlessly enjoyable, especially considering all the mod levels that one could play.)
5. Medal of Honor
6. Max Payne
7. Serious Sam
I also liked Unreal but hated Unreal tournament. Hexen and Quake were very boring comparison to any of the above.
I tried the demo for 1942 and could not stand it.

No it doesn't, how do you dare ?
I fully agree with the rest of the post though.
And back on topic, I really enjoyed BF 1942 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Serious Sam...well, it's fine when I'm angry against someone or something

Are there any FPS that aren't set in the 20th century or the future?

There are a few historical fantasy ones. Thief 1 & 2 (if you count those as FPSs) or Hexen for example.
There's also a few mods along those lines for half-life and such.

OREGON TRAIL 2! (at least when you got to hunt. Heck, I can only carry back 200 lbs, but let me shoot 7 elk!)

Ghost Recon is most certainly NOT a shoot-em-up. It is a tactical military combat simulation. Get it straight!

I think the original quake was great, q3a is nothing compared to UT in my opinion.
I love unreal tournament 2003 because the weapons are far more balanced. In the original UT, the rocket launcher was way too powerful, the sniper rifle was like an assault weapon and the flak cannon was too short range. I had to keep using the bio rifle . I much prefer the way they have done the weapons in new one. Most of you are probably bitter because you cant run it!! .
Its also faster gameplay too, I like the way the characters are shaped, move and respond. Also, (as much as I hate to admit it) the graphics do rule!.
Wolf sucked, purely because I kept dying on the escape level
Soldier of fortune and SOF II were great, for no apparent reason other than the fact that you could perform an autopsy with a shotgun.
WHY DID I NOT INCLUDE MAX PAYNE?!?!?! It truly rules. Unfortunately, it seems to want to run from the cd all the time, which sucks because I have a knack for scratching them.

Alright, Verto, give me some definitions.
Regardless, Ghost Recon is one of the best FPS that I have ever played. Even though you do control a squad, all the action is from the first-person perspective.
