UFO: Aftermath
(maybe there has been a thread about this already. i couldn't see it in the last 30 days)
nearly a decade ago there where a few games which kept me up all night, every night. civilisation, colonisation, railroad tycoon, etc.
and UFO (aka. X-COM, UFO Defence)
looks like a worthy successor is coming out now:
http://www.avault.com/previews/previ...?game=ufoafter
did any of you people play the first version, how did you like it and will you be trying this game?

Love XCom. It was the first game with depth that I actually understood.
I will definately be checking Aftermath out, and most likely buying it too if it is good.

UFO: Enemy Unknown is one of the all-time best games.
I am sort of looking forward to Aftermath, so I will give it a shot.

that was the first of the series.
You can also try to kick some underwater alien a$$ in 'Terror from the deep'. It's a good sequel.

X-Com1 is justifiably renowned as a classic. I will certainly look at reviews of the new game closely.

I'm a bit sceptical after looking at research list in the screenshot at that site, presumably of alien names. 'Little bird', 'Sharp dog'? 'Crab car'?

Yup, I've been watching this Aftermath for a while, along with the other upcoming tactical squad game that IMO has great potential: Silent Storm. It's going to be interesting to see the two compete, for I am sure they both deserve attention (well, I played SS demo, and thought it was great. UFO's screenies look very promising, though, too).

I hope they don't follow the Apocalypse school of alien design. "On no, a big bright blue alien is walking towards me! He might try to give me a teddy-bear hug! And a purple funnel-head is near him. Arrrgh!"
At least Enemy Unknown's aliens were scary.

I remember playing it for the first time with a friend. The first time we saw a chrisalid come running out of an alley and turn someone into a zombie was great.

I'm expecting very little out of this one.
Real-time, terrain not destroyable, can't really enter buildings, un-proven developers.

Funnily, if I'd recommend any strategy games these days it would be the games from Paradox (EU2, HOI), and they're (adjustable) real-time.
For a new good turn-based RPG, check out Temple of Elemental Evil.

If you haven't already played it, try Jagged Allegiance 2. It has tactical combat much like X-Com, only no aliens.

Compaired to X-Com it is.
You could Try Commandos 2 aswell (there is alsoa third being made) It's not turn based, but I find it has a similiar appeal.

I thought the sequel wasn't nearly as good as the first, just a dry rehashing, though admittedly I didn't play it nearly as much. And I hated the graphics, thought they went backwards there. Looking forward to the new one.

I didn't like the multitude of bugs, including ones that prevented you from researching most of the tech tree.

It better not have any copy protection schemes, or I refuse to buy it.

Yeah, that was annoying. But last time we had a TFTD discussion didn't someone say there was a patch?

Atleast you never knew what to expect. I remember once, on my very first passenger ship mission, I encountered a mixture of EVERY alien and they where just thrown around randomly. There where aliens in places you couldn't get to, and those big ones that take up 4 spaces, where stuck inside walls - it was a pretty interesting map.
I still remember opening the door to the kitchen and seeing half of one of those big aliens looking at me from the wall, as if someone stuffed it and mounted it there.

True, but that didn't help when I only discovered its existance several weeks into the game. I don't think the patch addressed all the bugs either.
Speaking of bugs I remember one notable attack that took place in UFO Enemy Unknown. I had equipped one of my interceptors with dual cannons (whatever the smallest, cheapest weapon for interceptors was) for the sole purpose of shooting down the extremely small ufos, or "pods" as I liked to call them. These are the one-man ufo's that looked like oil wells on the map, and shooting them with anything other than cannons will destroy them.
Anyway, I sucessfully shot one of these craft down and sent my troopship in to land and attack. Much to my surprise, not only could my soldiers equip guns and grenades in the pre-battle equip screen, but they got the opportunity to equip an unconcious sectoid!
The battle ended as soon as it started, with my sole adversary already KO'd and being carried around by one of my grunts.

IS that a bug? I haven't played the game in a long time, but I seem to remember being able to do that, to kidnap the alien and return to the ship and leave. Though I might be mistaken (probably) on that part.
