Damn, Sikander just inadvertantly located a flaw in my judo-taking plans. The last thing I need is to provide my female students with another opportunity to grope me.

Maybe I can stand in for you. I'm sure that I can take a little peril. In fact a bit of peril might be just the thing for me.

How can the obvious line from The Matrix be worse than the obvious line from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves? Robin Hood is objectively the cheesier movie...

Small word of warning. If you are going to use a folding knife of any sort get one with a locking blade. The bigger Victorinox Swiss Army knives have a locking mechanism. The reason is simple - I have a scar across my index finger where a pocket knife folded up whilst I was using it. Not recommended.
For a cheap survival type knife try a replica of the US Navy WWII pilots survival knife. Then it doesn't matter if you break or lose it. I've had mine for nearly 20 years of occasional use and it is still in good condition.
Switchblades look impressive but the mechanisms can be fragile. A butterfly knife is a better option once you get the hang of using it. Unfortunately they are now illegal in the UK - damn politicians!

I have a good 'guerilla' knife I acquired while in the army. It's really good IMO, good in the woods you can practically chop down trees, well it's not a machete, it's knife but it's very good steele. Very good steele. Good grip, which you need if you push it through the stomach and it gets stuck (maybe lack of air, I don't know but it's really hard to get your knife back), so good grip helps you to not lose it. It's practical and all that. But I DO NOT carry it with me under any circumtances. Even if the other guy had gun, cops would still say 'your knife is superior to that gun'. So no.. and I don't really need it anymore.
But yes, I have a great knife and I love it. Too bad I can't shoot with it though!

I have my Great-Grandfather's bayonet, but I doubt I could remove it from the 100-year-old rifle it's attached to. I think it's been there since the relief of Mafeking.
I have my Great-Uncle's scout knife- a classic old carbon-steel sheath knife with a 6-inch blade.

I my Lapp Knife I got in the army. Great for eg. hiking, you can use it for basically everything, chopping wood, cleaning fish, eating, self defence (not that I'd ever need it for that purpose).

my gun thread gets closed, but this one remains open. wtf!
I have a butterfly knife. I think the official name is balisong.
I also have my knife I use at work all the time. It's a little big, some peopel are shocked when I pull it out. They always ask if it's legal.
Is there a limit on the length of blade you can carry around?

Balisong is IIRC a brand name for mediocre quality knives, especially butterfly types.
If you carry your knife in the open or in a sheath it doesn't matter how big it is. If you carry it hidden, then in many states it would be illegal (concealed weapon) unless the blade is less than 4".
