Expansion packs!
What's the deal with these expansion packs? I notice there are several different ones. Which is the best? Conquerors? Is there one expansion pack that includes all game improvements or do you have to buy both in order to get all the new stuff including multiplayer? Do you also need to update the game version by downloading a patch from the Internet or is it enough to update the game via the expansion pack?
Please advice me before I go out and buy the game! =)

The Conquests expansion pack will also contain the features from Play the World, I believe.
I would recommend waiting for it to come out, and then buying Civ3: Game of the Year Edition (containing the original Civ3 + latest patches) and buying the Conquests expansion pack.
And, as new patches come out, you will definitely want to download them in order to fix any bugs or problems.

What Jonny says.
The Conquests expansion pack includes everything from the Play the World expansion pack - but you'll still need the vanilla game, too. And patching to the latest version is always THE way to go, especially with Civ3...
Definitely wait for Conquests, though - few more days only!

Isn't every piece of commercial software a "search for more money" ?
Besides Conquests is really looking good, from the included content point of view and with all those beta testers working on it, I hope it won't be so buggy like the previous releases.
Btw, Conquerors is an AoE expansion The upcoming Civ3 XP is called "Conquests".

Unless you own a mac, in which case they can't be bothered porting it, even though Civ III sold really well.

Somehow I find it hard to believe that Conquests will include all the civs that were introduced in PTW. However, I would definitely expect it to include all the features (new improvements, game mechanics, etc.) from PTW, as well as bug fixes.

It's from the Conquests pre-sell "Best of the Net" cd. Perfectly legitimate.

I got it form the free CD that comes with C3C. It has a strat guide for SP and MP on the CD. In the SP guide I found this screen shot.
It was done a bit before final cut, as a couple of place did not have all of the info.
I ask the clerk if they would be giving one for preorders. He brought out some to show me and I paid for the game and asked if I could have one. He gave me the pack, I later found it was actually three of them, so I had my girlfriend take two back. I did not want to see some other gamer miss out. I have posted a few shots from it, such as teh one showing the AU mod.

Think Diety with massive bonuses and a bad attitude and you'll be right on track.
I don't know about Sid beating it, but I know it can (and has) been done. (Not be me, I'm not that good).

I like the idea of natural disasters. With Civ III, I some times get the feeling that the computer guided civilizations are cheating with technology. Also, the AI has very weak naval battle and support tactics. On land, the army's react poorly to the line and circle defenses of WWII. Well, I still enjoy the game. And I will see how the AI develops in this newer version.
(Once I have my outposts set up, the AI just falls in time)

Ok, if you say so. Maybe, they just trade better than I ever could do at the beginning of the game. I wonder how they all determine their prices on trades too.

The only cheat they have is to know the land. So they know if you have left a city unguarded or where a resource will be, before they have the tech.
Trading is a long subject, but it comes down to them having an advantage and leveraging it. You want a tech and they want as much as they can get for it (who would not). If it is a war tech or leads to a wonder, they do not want to trade it.
This is why you see them asking for a lot or not even want to trade something like Printing Press. Humans put no value on it as it is not required for the next age, but the AI hold it tight.
Try getting nationlism. They will be tough on luxs usually as they will probably not have market places and not get all that much use form another lux, but the human will get many happy faces form one more lux. The AI knows that and will ask a ton for it.
Anyway, there is some logic to why they tend to want more for things than we thing it is worth. That glass of water has a small value if you have lots of water and are not thursty. If you are dry and have no access to water, the price goes up, there will not have any compassion.

I have notice that I have to keep an army in each city. And they are cheap on resource trading if you are poor. I guess it was a trade for human intelligence in the minds of the designers, but it is a little irritating at times.

There are other bonuses the AI opponents do get when you are playing on higher difficulty levels. These bonuses involve production rate, free units and reduced unhappiness for example.
You can find a nice summary here:
