Why did you chose your nick?
I had just finished reading the Foundation series and picked the main protaganist's name. It's misspelled because for some reason I couldn't get registered the first few times I tried and I thought that Hari Seldon may have already been taken.

Mine fitted my personality very well at the time. It doesn't now, but there's no point in changing.

I used to work in a Deli, and everyone but me had a nickname of some sort. So a co-worker decided I needed a nickname, and he picked "Stuie". Within in week everyone there was calling me Stuie.
Then one of my friends came in and heard everyone calling me Stuie, so he did too. Later I switched jobs, and this same friend ended up working with me (and calling me Stuie). So the name carried over to my new job.
Now, ten years later, I have finally left it all behind, and no one knows me as Stuie except online.

Seemed like a cool nickname for an Israeli commie poster, at the time. My previous nick was a nick I used in RPG games, and is actually the misspelling of a region in Scotland. Picked it up as a name of a knight in some classic book I don't remember the name off. That knight wasn't much of a fighter, liked to drink, and was generally a humorous sidekick.

I was playing a character named Osweld the Brute in Asheron's Call when I decided to stick to a single user name in most places I went. Yes, at the time, I did not realise 'Osweld' was usually spelled with an A, but the E is just as well, since 'Oswald' isn't a very unique name.
I kind of wish I'd been using a more interesting name when I decided to stick to a single one, but oh well.

Back in the late 1980's I used to both play D&D and log in to local BBSs since this was pre-World Wide Web. Oerdin way my favorite D&D character's name and I used it on several of the local BBSs here in San Diego.
It just seemed natural to carry over the same name from the BBSs to the internet.

People have been calling me Allie Cove for years. I just thought I could extend that to something vaguely Roman - Alinestra Covelia.

Al = Ala(i)n
va= Van
The last part of my name was dropped because it didn't sound right.
The 848 that used to be there was from registering at the EA site which wouldn't let me register alva, and among the numbers suggested was 848 which sounded better then 265 or 748.
Rather boring, isn't it.

Not exactly, but there's a clear linguistic link from my real name to "Allie Cove".

Back then as I chose my nick I couldn't come up with a good nick, so I just picked my initials...
But I was thinking about changing it, though nothing big. Maybe I'll change it to: AiiDeeGee
The reason why I might change it is simple: If my nick is pronounced with South Juddish (?) accent it says something I don't want it to sound like
Anyone who's got a better suggestion?

My internet provider made up my first mail address as frami@libero.it- it sounded gay so I switched to Franit, which is ever more gay actually
I liked SMAC and Foreman Franit wasn't just enough stylish

3 reasons.
1. I had to. Registering without giving nick turned out to be quite difficult. I'm still working on it.
2. So you can make this thread.
3. Because it is not my real name.
YES IN YOUR FACE! BOOYAAH!

My name is an "phonical" interpretation of Gaffer, only I made the G a J (even though Gaffer is usually pronounced with a hard G as in Gab or Gabe and not with the soft G as in giraffe) since my real name is Jon. I thought it would be ironic in that I would shed some light on the real issues around here. You know, the real important issues ... I've used the name for about 3 years now, before that I went as Shrum (for shroom) but that became either common or restricted for some reason...
Gaffer
AKA: Chief Lighting Technician
The head of the electrical department, responsible for the design and execution of the lighting plan for a production. Early films used mostly natural light, which stagehands controlled with large tent cloths using long poles called gaffs (stagehands were often beached sailors or longshoremen, and a gaff is a type of boom on a sailing ship). In 16th Century English, the term "gaffer" denoted a man who was the head of any organized group of laborers.

I used to play LAN C&C against my dad. I always picked green as my colour so my units could hide in the tiberium fields. He dubbed me this, I think he was taking the piss.
