Films that say something about the human condition last better than films that sum up the spirit of the age.
The only sci-fi or horror film that did not appear dated
10 years later was "Bladerunner."
The great thing about that film was that it was better than the book, the actors, and, the script.
The other film that transcended it roots was "The Usual Suspects."

Of course, there was a war on.

not in 1957....
perhaps it was a post war inferioirty complex seeing that by that time the japanese were beginning to catch up to the brits ...

The Neverending Story is, absolutely one of my favorite movies of all time. . It maybe have been presented in such a way that it appealed to kids, but it's message was very deep, and very important, with a very strong, engaging plot, even for adults.

All Al Jolson movies and Minstral shows.
"Beach" movies of the late '50s. early '60s seem to be parodies of themselves.

Very few of sexploitation and blacksploitation films of the late '60/ early '70 work today, my droogs.
As for S/F films, many Apocalypse films still work well today - 'Omega Man' & 'A Boy and His Dog' being my favourites.

It depends on whether or not they date them.
Like Battle for the Planet of the Apes takes place in the '90's.
ACK!

another supporter of Bladerunner here. I saw it as a kid- thought it boring.
But I saw it recently expecting it to be really early 80'ish, and it wasn't.
The film still looks damn good.
star wars looks pretty good, though it does show just a teeny bit of age. But the special effects were still damn good for being that old.

I think I downloaded that movie Deepthroat. It looks pretty bad. But there are so many references to it, I had to see what the big deal was.

This was one of the few porn movies that I have ever watched. I wish I hadn't, but like you I had to see what the big deal was. Apparantly I wasn't old enough to have been impressed.

The Terminator series actually doesn't stand the test. Skynet was supposed to go rogue in '96.

yes, but they still look cool
I admit the first Terminator is starting to age a bit badly.
The second one also is 90'ish because they use a hit popular song.
This is the problem when you use popular music in your soundtrack.
The first Terminator movie had that scene in the nightclub which is very 80's.

Re Bridge over the river Kwai.
Of course the film shows the Japenese in a far far better light than actual reality.
One life for every sleeper on that railway.
