World's Tallest Skyscraper Completed -- Taipei 101
1,671 feet. 101 stories. Damn, that's tall. I really like the architecture, too.
I wonder how long it will be the world's tallest. A couple of years?

It looks like a model, not an actual structure, since it dwarfs the surrounding buildings.

So how much of the tower is actual usable space and how much of it is just a useless spire designed to win the title of tallest building?

Good question, Oerdin. According to skyscrapers.com, "Taipei 101 will hold 3 of the World's Tallest Building titles when it is topped out: Tallest to structural top, Tallest to roof and Highest occupied floor."

well its designed to last at least a good deal past 75 years, since the way the land lease works is that the city government leases the land for free for 75 years on the condition it gets to own the building when the lease is up.

Hmm. The skyscraper.com people seem really anal about their image rights.
I think the first tower looks really good.
This one does not.

Until the Liebeskind Freedom Tower is built at Ground Zero. That is to be 1776 feet IIRC.

Do you know if the height, 1776, was intentionally selected for it's significance, or no?

It was. He said, in an interview, that he could build the tallest tower in the world, and someone would just come along and build a taller one. He said he wanted to make the height have a specific meaning, so that if someone did that, it wouldn't matter so much. Liebeskind is big on the almost spiritual aspect of the tower. Supposidly on 9/11, the sunlight will come through the corridor between the towers between the exact times the planes hit.
There have been many conspiracy theories about the height, from Christian and Jewish conspiracies, to his own name. In reality, the height was chosen because of Independance Day. Apt for something called the Freedom Tower, and a nice touch IMHO.

The rest of the world may be getting taller, but it still has a long way to catch up to the beauty of the architecture of Chicago.
1776...Nice touch.
