Alien was scary, but not as much as Aliens. I guess the difference is that in the first the crew were just paid to scavenge, not fight aliens. In the sequel the crew was trained to fight the bugs and they were all c@cky. I'll agree that the first was meant to be more suspenseful and play on the audience's nerves in a different, more horrorful way. I guess the action in the sequel made it a better movie IMO. The scene in Aliens where they have the bugs approaching on their little detection monitors and they just keep coming but don't appear because they're on a different level so they pop the roof and look above and there they are got me jumping, hehe. Yikes...
And it had one of the best lines I've ever heard in a horror movie. Bill Paxton (I think) is whining after the rescue shuttle crashes and they're discussing how long it will be before another ship is sent - 17 DAYS! Paxton has a fit and Ripley says to him "this little girl has survived here much longer without any military training", and Paxton whines "why don't you put her in charge".
Game over, GAME OVER MAN!
Oh yeah, Punpkinhead was a good horror movie. Scream was good too...

Pitch Black was good too, but kind of an Aliens rip-off.
Another great line from Aliens: Vasquez, the latina buff chick, is doing pull-ups and Bill Paxton asks here if anyone ever mistook her for a man. Vasquez says no, has anyone ever mistaken you for a man?

The Exorcist, The Shining and Alien have been the only three movies to scare the everliving crap out of me when I first watched them.
As far as horror series go, Hellraiser wins hands down if only because the first two were just too damn good.

Halloween
Alien
Night of the Living Dead
But I'm really a sucker for the classics.
Dracula
The Wolfman
Frankenstein
The Thing
The Blob
The Creature From the Black Lagoon
Godzilla
etc.

Very true. That series needs Clive Barker back to make it worthwhile again.

I don't know if it needs the creator's hand to revive it or if it should just be allowed to fade into obscurity. He's written so many other good novels; the Hellraiser series was entirely based on a short story. So was Candyman, which was sequeled ad nauseum.

The Exorcist is my personal favorite. A great book and movie with a lot of underlying symbolism.
The first Halloween was great too.

Hellraiser I
Devil's Advocate
The Wickerman
The Exorcist (although a remake with modern special effects would be even better)

Alien is indeed a horror movie, no doubt about that. And yes, it is VERY scary.
But the scarriest movie I've ever seen is this movie that is filmed by a videocamera, and is about a bunch of people attacked by aliens. I think it was made after "The Blair Witch Project". It had a very real feel to in and it indeed was horrifying. in a good way.

As Sloww said first, The (Stanley Kubrick) Shining is the best. It's the only film that's actually scared me, but then, I don't watch that much horror.
I'd like to see the Ring, looks good. The Exorcist was awful IMHO. It all looked so dated, so fake and all i kept thinking was "why is this scary". Almost (but not quite) as bad as the Blair Witch Project

Alien
The Birds (I saw as a little kid, which is why I thought it was so scary)
Alien was scary because you didn't know what the creature was.
Aliens was scary because you did know what the creatures were.

Oh yeah Night of the Hunter.
I also like the two first Scream movies but then they're not really about the horror as such.

The Shining movie was stupid, the miniseries was the book on film basically.
"Salem's Lot" scared the crap out of me when I was a little kid.
Same with "The Nightstalker".
Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein, also was great.
In that vein, anybody remember "Saturday the 14th"?
ACK!

I forgot about that. I saw it a couple of years ago and still loved it. Very atmospheric...far scarier than a guy in a scream mask running around a uni building with a dagger.

And in hindsight another reason why I think Alien was one of the more scary movies, is that we saw the special premier with all the reviewers so NOBODY knew about the infamous stomach scene. I've never see an ENTIRE movie theather crowd jump like that. There's always a few that know what's going to happen, but not that time. When we saw it the second time you could hear people whispering, "here it comes". which really takes a lot of the fun out of it.

"The Wicker Man" is my favourite. Closely followed by "Don't look now". I like the more cerebral horror.
|
I was going to post those two (although in reverse order)! Now that's scary!
The scene at the beginning of Don't Look Now in which the photo turns red ... (shudder)
Alien will always remain one of my favorite horror films as well. The scariest monster flicks are usually the ones in which you seldom see the creature.

Actually, if they'd gotten Attenborough to narrate it, it would have been truly terrifying. Or soporific. I don't know - I think half my brain might've liked it.

Poltergeist was damn scary when I was a little kid. And it is still pretty scary today.
I liked Candyman- though it did have that slasher movie feel to it.
Alien of course was a classic. That rates high.
The Shining was a pretty damn good film, but it really didn't scare me for some reason.
My vote for #1 goes to Alien.

Whenever I want to get the crap scared outta me, I just read the Snopes urban legends horror page in the dark, late at night.
One time my cat hopped up on my lap....scared the sh*t outta me.
The other time was when me and a bud were driving back from a game in Waco, late at night on route 6 talking about spooky Urban Legends. As I commented then, "I'm really glad we're having this conversation at midnight on a two lane highway in the middle of nowhere.".

MC Hammer as the Phantom of Opera?
If I remembered anything from the play or remembered any MC Hammer songs I'd make some humorous play on words right now, but I can't. Sorry.

Hammer films are some of the cheesiest but funnest to watch horror movies, but they aren't scary.
