Forum jump?
How come the forum jump combobox at the bottom of open threads sometimes are gone? And sometimes they're not?
It looks pretty random...

Maybe it has something to do with forum load? But honestly, I've not seen this happen yet...

It has to do with heavy traffic.
Same same as with avatars.

Ah, ok... Wouldn't a missing forum jump make even more forum load, since everybody has to go a longer way to get to the forum they want to get to?

True, it's kind of an own goal to remove it on heavy traffic.

Not if you use the back (mouse) button.

But back (Keyboard button ) doesn't work if you want to get to a forum you have visited today...

It should work. In Opera it does, at least.
Maybe forum jump does use lots of system resources.

I seem to recall avatars not working much more than the forum jump not working though.

To display the forum jump box (on each page you visit), the page has to parse through all the currently accessible forums for you and then create a dropdown box out of them. It uses a fair amount of system resources.
This is why the dropbox got removed completely from the Something Awful forums, and they're running the forums on 5 servers.

Wouldn't it be more sensible to make a static list - the forums don't change that much...

It does sound rather inefficient if it works the way Ixnay describes.

That would require work, though. And people with access to hidden forums would either have to get to them some other way or everyone would have links to them (unless you coded seperate drop-boxes for different access groups and civgroups, which would be a large pain in the ass).
I'm fine with the regular drop-box being unavailable at times. But here's a suggestion I'd like to see: Copy the
Apolyton CS Forums > Miscellaneous > Apolyton/Community > Forum jump?
links from the top of the page so that they're at the bottom of the page as well. That way it's easier to jump back out to the forum you're already in when the forum jump is gone.

Are you serious? There's a forum jump dropdown bar at the bottom of the screen on the right. You can use it to jump between forums, funnily enough.
