There is no way this would be fraud-- Nasty perhaps but not fraud. .. Lots of men lie about all sorts of things to get women in bed. This is just a larger scale lie.
Also I don't think they join the show knowing about the wealth. I believe that the women join a dating show and are THEN told about the supposed wealth of the target. Its tough to see where the women get defrauded of anything-- If they married the guy under a whole bunch of false pretenses that would be different.
Also, almost all these shows pay SOMETHING to ALL the contestants and the conterstants do get put up in luxury digs and do a bunch of fun stuff . . . So on balance I think the idea is nasty and I won't watch but FOX looks to be on pretty solid legal ground . PLus the only women that get hurt are those shallow enough to let a lack of money hurt them.
Also don't they generally give the winners a bunch of bucks anyhow . ..

Last point
I don't think a woman has to be necessarily "stupid" to fall for this trick. People tend to believe what is presented to them and this guy will likely have all the trappings of wealth-- The smarter ones may figure out that something is up.
There are a fair number of oil millionaires here and many don't have a champagne and caviar lifestyle. A lot of then still work in bluejeans and drive pickup trucks so there is no obvious clues as to who might or might not be rich

Gee, a simple plain old rancher, who looks like he works out about 3 hours a day and drinks a gallon of creatine a day.
Yeah, some reality Tv.

Yeah, right! You probably got every damned episode on tape.
However, I think it's another show. The girls are told that they get money if the guy picks them. So the girls will try to pretent to like him to get the money, or something like that. I haven't actually watched it so I don't really know. And I have seen quite a few of those thrasy shows at least once. They are like car accidents. You don't want to look but...

I have no sympathy at all for the women.
In the first show, they got all the women together and told them about Joe. When they mentioned that he was a cowboy, ALL the women started giving strange looks and made jokes about it, etc. but then when they mentioned that he was worth 80 million, every single one changed their tune and thought it was cool. (one in particular made a negative comment about cowboys but when she dressed to meet him just happened to find a teeshirt that said cow girl on it)
It is SOOOOO obvious that all they're interested in is the money, so it's all in good fun. I feel sorry for David/Joe, because he appears to be a down to earth guy that (according to the promos) is really going to start getting disgusted with himself for playing along with the scam.

I think it's the other way around.... if they happen to like the guy, that's a bonus. If not, then what the hell he's a millionaire and it's time to spend spend spend..

There was a bit of that with Evan in Joe Millionaire I.

I'm suspicious of their ability to do this. At some point the participants need to know what sort of show they are getting into, and they could argue that since they didn't know the title of the show, they were mislead into believing the show in general would be of a different nature than it turned out to be. Fox would have a tough time explaining that they suddenly changed their mind and decided to name the show "Joe Millionaire." If Fox takes too many steps to make it look to the participants that the show will be different from Joe Millionaire, they could end up getting sued for defamation of charactor by any of the participants. (I.E. they thought it would be a show about romance not about marrying someone rich.)
Frankly I think that most of the women in the show know what the're getting into this time, and the only stupid people are the Fox viewers who believe the women are actually getting tricked this time around. Keep in mind its not only the participants who potentially can discover the truth through research, its also their relatives, some of whom may live in America. The women are assuming the will get a payout if they "win" by getting the man to ask to marry them, otherwise Fox really would be setting themselves up to be sued.

I am sure they are given the true name of the show. Because Joe Millionaire doesn't imply deception. So they know going in this guy is a millionaire.
It all comes down to carefully worded contracts they sign.
Sure some are bound to find out what Joe Millionaire is. But most of the women who want to participate in these types of shows don't know better.
And I have a sneaking suspician the girls are in on it anyways. I think a lot of these reality shows are fixed.

I seriously think the women don't know any better... at least most of them. There may be a few who've heard of the concept, but as shown in this thread some Euros have heard of the show but didn't know the 'trick' in it.

The women deserve what they get. I don't even feel sorry for the crybaby "Joe". He knew what he was getting into.
p.s. Notice my name change.

Was anyone else disappointed by the "shocking twist" of the first one? I thought it would be something good, such as:
The girl ends up choosing between him and the money she thought he had.
or
He really is a millionaire and Fox had everyone fooled all along.

(spoiler )
That at the end of the Joe Millionaire they (Joe and girl) were each given half a million if she decided to stay with him, even though he lied. I assume that if she decided not to stay with him, he got the total $1 mil.

In terms of finding out what's going on -- I'm fairly sure the entire series was taped prior to the first episode being broadcast. So, either everyone was satisfied enough with the outcome not to blab, or the contracts everyone signed were seriously scary.

Is it a lame American export, or an original show?
