I have an idea. First, hexedit the first unit in the saved file to be an AI air unit (move 0) in a corner, well protected from any attacks (using river mines). This ensures that the AI unit will remain in that position for the rest of the game. Write down the hex string for the AI unit and use it as a search key to find the starting position of units. Then starting from that position, you can do whatever you want in editing unit slots. If the total number of units in the game can be obtained then we know when to stop.

Do you think it's possible to change the length event files may use? This figure also changed drastically between CiC, FW, MGE, and ToT... Have you alreay tried where it is located?

It would be nice if you could do this job, since I'm always running out of events space, perhaps a few MB could be enough

SCDARS: Second Front is progressing but slower than expected. Each phase gets more complicated to account for prior events and possible diverging results from player to player. Release expected within a month...hopefully.

Xin Yu: I think the question here was adding more "types" of units to allow for Free French, Canadian and more...
The total number of units (Too many units...) should not be an issue in SF.

Nemo: I'm sure you need another project like you need a hole in the head , but I have to agree with Leonidas....the Second Front "engine" seems to be a perfect fit for the "Battle of the Bulge". The fuel component of SF and the Summer-Winter feature of RF could perfectly mimic the Germans' desperate attempt to reach the Allied fuel depots while relying on bad weather to ground the powerful Allied air.

Just when it seemed that new WWII themes were imposssible, you've reinvigorated the genre! My hat is off to you and your dedicated corps of playtesters. (Let's not forget them everyone, else we wouldn't see SF until the snows fall!)

Battle of the Bulge is definitely on my list of "I would love to do that" themes. A House-to-house depiction of Stalingrad is also up there...

BUT! Right now Second Front is a 100% effort and the redo of Red Front is lined up right behind this one. Then we will see...

I also want to thank the testplayers for their efforts... Without them I'd give up. Right now there is only one active (Anzac) with Petroski and Winchell taking a break... If anyone has FW and wants to spend many HOURS being Ike and Monty and writing feedback I am open to getting some more help right now.

If someone with very good English skills wants to proofread all the files that would be great too.

Just bumping this subject since it will soon become current again...
Here is the map size approx. 10,000



It show the situation in the morning on D-Day. You can see the Allied Armada North of the 5 landing zones. You can also make out the hedgerow terrain that dominates the Normandy countryside and even see the sunken road that criss-cross it. This is one of the main features of the game... learning how to fight in the hedgerows. Along the North edge of the map is the Southern coast of England where every soldier, every tank, every fuel truck, every airplane that is used in Normandy must come from. There is no production management in conquered France since the French village cannot produce anything!

It looks perfect. How much longer until the release? 2-3 weeks? I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

No more than 2-3 weeks if I get the time off to work on it.
Yes I am still planning version 1.941 of Red Front if there are still takers. Harlan has completed the new map and city placement... He did a great job on it.

Nemo, yes I am certainly looking forward to 1.941

I am just about through a 1,000 page book "The War in Russia 1941-1945" by Alexander Werth. Great read.
It has renewed my love for this scenario. I am completely willing to help in any kind of way with playtesting etc... I would love to also help out with new pop up events. They are what really get one into the game. I'd love to get a peak at that map too.

Captain Nemo, if you need yet another playtester for Red Front 1.941, I have a lot of knowledge of World War II, a lot of free time on my hands, and both the FW and the Multiplayer versions of Civ2, so I could check the AI for both versions for you. I'm also clairvoyant, and I invented wool.

Just an update:
I just finished the last event file for Second Front. There are a total of 11 for the eleven part game. It plays in 88 turns (Red Front had 54 turns)

My first experience with it is that it is tough but kind of long to play. There are enough innovations to keep the interest up for the first 40 turns. There is also a definite potential for losing the game to the AI. The AI has units that have far better stats than the Human player. I have also managed to get the AI to change tactics in mid game.

Now a question: The current version is designed for FW and will NOT work in MPG due to some features I use in FW. How many are interested in the MPG version? If there is more need for that one I will finish both and release them simultaneously.

Well, I have both, but I prefer to use FW over MGE; especially for scenarios, so I think you should just release the FW version, although it's easy for me to say that.

Well, I have MGE so I'd prefer that...however, if we could get the FW version out sooner...hell, I'll go out and buy the cd just to play SF! But an MGE edition would be nice.

Doesn't Apolyton have some kind of converter? FW->MGE?
Would that screw up the delicate events etc...?

All I have is MPG, and I would be very (darn, how do you do bold/italics?) interested in playing Second Front. It is totally up to you, of course, but I think you should know the an MPG-compatable SF would be very much appreciated. BTW, Red Front is an amazingly excellent scenario. Keep up the good work!

Captain, I just thought of this...

You said awhile back that SF is a hotseat game controlling two Civs. If this is the case there is a big issue to deal with. When playing hotseats in MGE, you don't get to watch the AI's counterstrikes! Instead, you get a little grey box that says "The AI Moves...". I was chatting with the LastANZAC and he was telling me that that does not happen in the FW version.
To play SF on MGE you'd have to pay extra-close attention to what the Germans do in between your turns. If they have lots of reinforcements or try to move up the panzers, we'll need to see what they are up to.
In light of this, I would suggest you put it out on FW because of it's ability to watch the AI's movements.
Maybe I'm wrong...I don't have FW, I'm going on what I was told.

That is exactly the reason MPG is not as good as FW for this scenario in particular. It is playable in MPG but not quite as easy to play... I will probably make both to keep the door open to all potential players.

That's exactly right. How about some more screenshots?

This looks great and I can't wait to play it. It would probably be better if it used MPG because that's what I'm using right now, but I also have FW, though as I recall I've been having problems with it.
