no. the mets don't stoop to using a "designated hitter". if you field, you hit. you don't have a permanent pinch hitter taking the place of your pitcher.

Ah, a purist in the DH/noDH debate. On the one hand, I do see the DH as an artificial add-on. On the other, watching pitchers hit is usually pretty painful. Most of them are awful "hitters."

oh, i'll admit it's pretty painful. but every now and then they surprise ya. kinda like woods in the nlcs.
it's far better than adding some other person in whose only job is to bat. it's pointless, and it's a crutch.

Crutch yes, pointless no. The point is to put a good hitter in the black hole otherwise known as the pitcher's spot in the lineup, thus increasing scoring. I'm enough of a hardcore baseball fan that I'd be ok with getting rid of the DH, especially with the offensive numbers being put up nowadays. But obviously MLB sees value in the DH, and even if that wasn't the case, the player's union would NEVER surrender jobs like that. So we're stuck with it, for better or for worse.

bah.
it's for the worse. still, there are some american league teams which i'll grudgingly admit are ok. the yankees are not one of them.

Of course not. If you're not a Yankee fan, you must hate them. It's a rule.

The only problem with the DH is the fact that the NL hasn't adopted it yet. Bunch of 20th century ancients...

reismark, you are obviously a neanderthal. the dh isn't a "progressive" rule. it's an abberation.

The DH isn't just an abberation, Q, it's an abortion on the sport of baseball .
It's supposed to be the perfect sport. Nine players play offense, same Nine play defense. Obviously the DH league isn't real baseball. It's kiddie baseball, like T-ball or baseball with aluminium bats.

woohoo! the Yankees lost today!
And about the DH. I'm pretty much against it, because it lessens the strategy of baseball. The main reason I watch sports is for the strategy. That's why I like football so much.
Just look at tonight. They knew they had to pull Clemens to put in a pinch hitter. Though the move didn't exactly pay off, but they had to try to get some runs. And then Florida had the painful decision which pitcher to play in the 9th. That decision didn't pay off well in the 9th, but they managed to win it in the 12th.
And about pichers hitting. Roger Clemens last at bat was a hit!

Last night was good. Very good.
I just about did a spit-take with my beer when Urbina hung that pitch to Sierra. OMFG.
Good thing Weaver returned the favor to Gonzalez...

Ah! In that sense I'll agree with you.
The caliber of their play does leave something to be desired though.

Great game last night. Yeah, they lost, but they also came back down 3-1 in the 9th against Urbina (I really don't like that guy). So now it's a best of 3.

*sighs* Last night wasn't Weaver's fault despite the papers being all over him again this morning (which really, REALLY makes my blood boil). The goats for this one are Aaron Boone (twice), Jason Giambi, and John Flaherty - aka the players who came to bat for the Yankees with runners in scoring position, all AFTER Sierra's big hit, and couldn't get the job done. It's cowardly to blame Weaver for this one...

It's not really his fault, no. A terrible pitcher like him shouldn't be put in that situation. He's bound to fail. Which he did.
The game changed when the Yankees failed to score following Bernie's leadoff double in the 11th. Looper did a great job/Boone and Flaherty sucked and you just knew the Marlins were gonna pull it off at that point.

The Bush family is originally from Connecticut, IIRC. So you can argue that one both ways.

He's not a terrible pitcher, goddamnit! He won 18 GAMES two seasons ago as a member of the DETROIT ****ING TIGERS. If you can win TEN games with Detroit, then you are officially an underappreciated talent. The reason he's failed in New York is because he's had to look over his shoulder the moment he got here. If the ****ing media and the Boss had just given the goddamn guy a break he'd be our #2 guy by now.

He had one pretty good year, yes. But if you look at his peripheral stats (strikeout/walk ratio, batting average against on balls put in play, etc) you might notice that he benifitted from a nice helping of good luck too. That luck has not followed him to NYC.
Second, I believe that there are players who simply cannot handle the pressure of playing for a team like the Yankees. Some people shine under pressure, others wilt. It's no good bemoaning the fact that the pressure exists, because that will not change. Therefore, you have to try and get players who can handle it. Weaver has shown pretty conclusively that he cannot.
And to think, we gave up Ted Lilly for him! I was pissed when the deal was made and unfortunately it appears I was right. I would have preferred being wrong...

When was this? In reismark land?
http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/weaveje01.shtml
Weaver's career win loss:
1999 (Det) 9-12
2000 (Det) 11-15
2001 (Det) 13-16
2002 (Det & NY) 11-11
In fact in 2000 and 2001 he was 2nd in the AL for losses.

Speaking of hating teams, there's a rumor floating around that Bobby Cox got fired. anyone hear anything about that? Probably bunk, but the commish likes to keep this stuff secret until after the yankees win.

Anyone who hates the Yankees is nothing but a pinko commie! The Yankees represent success! How dare you lowlifes and no-good bumbs attack someone just for their success? America is meant to be a meritocracy: the better do better. If the Yankees do so well is becuase they have built upon their previous success for even further success. Yes, rooting for the Yankees is rooting for US Steel, and every single red-blooded, steak eating, capitalism loving American should root for US Steel, cause it was the product of good ol' American ingenuity and hard work!
So enough commie bullcrap about attacking those that are successful! Stand up for AMERICAN VALUES! SUPPORT THE YANKEES!
YANKEES!

Go Marlins... Who have through hard work and determination lived the American dream and came from nothing and have gotten to the top! (and don't the Yankees have a 'King George' )
Up 3 games to 2. McKeon may pitch Beckett on 3 days rest to try to close it out in Game 6.
