what would be nice is to see the online community do some vigilante justice and start DNSing Gator's website.

This is a big 'whatever' on the frontlines: spyware, SPAM, and pop-ups/unders are all crap to the average shmoe. I suggest we call it all 'Crapware' and be done with it.

I thought America fights the war on terrorism?
Why doesn't Gator get bombed?
Or the RIAA?
Or Bill Gates?

WIn XP has a system restore feature which let's you restore the registry to a previous date and/or time. On one occation I installed a share ware program which installed gator (and no the bastards didn't declare they were installing spyware) and I successfully removed it from my registry using Win XP's system restore feature.

They will simply invent a new term to describe Gator and adaware, etc will then label it as such.
|
Sure, but it is a first step to "legalise" it.

As long as the spybot/adaware software can still detect the stuff and stop it doing its evil games, then i wont mind if they have to call it 'really helpfull advice pop up software' - most people will know what it does, and that its bad.
Just a thought but if you use something like partition magic to keep a clean install image of your pc, when you reimage it you do lose all the spyware stuff dont you?
Its a shame we cant sue companies like gator for putting stuff on our computers that can cause crashes etc.

Anybody else seen the Napster ads lately? Are we cool to download with impunity again, or are FBI helis going to land on my lawn once I get that latest Britney Spears/Metallica/Madonna joint?

The last time I encountered gator I wasn't offered the option of refusing it. I tried to make it go away, but it refused and downloaded itself anyway. I don't see how that differs from spyware.

No, Napster is now firmly the cheap, slutty b*tch of the Recording Industry. I forget which companies are participating, but only the songs they want to give are available...for a nominal fee...

I'm assuming it came in the form of a popup: If you're faced with that kind of situation, ctrl-alt-delete should give you the Task Manager (assuming you use Win98 or XP). "End Process" any instances of IEXPLORE.EXE should get it to knock that sh*t off for that session, otherwise reboot the computer.
I haven't been faced with Gator, that I recall, but I've been attacked by similar disruptive pushes from things trying to install themselves and refusing to take "F*CK OFF!!!" for an answer.

He should be able to find the download process and zap it.
