Elise Game Recap

A very interesting series of plays starts at move 15. Elise has built up a substantial lead, and the board is closing in the mid-game. Quackle needs to create a scoring opportunity. It plays RIF M2, holding back ANQU, in the hopes of being able to make a double word move placing the Q on the triple letter square J2. Elise recognizes the threat, and after some thought plays VIRL 2K, taking those plays off the board and spoiling the upper-middle triple word square. This proves to be a wise move -- Quackle made the very nice draw EI?, and had Elise not closed plays on this row, Quackle could have then played AEQUoRIN 2H for 122 points.

In the moves that follow, Quackle has some quality tiles on its racks, but thanks to the closed mid-game play on this board, nowhere to play a bingo. Its AD 5G and DEV D11 are all about opening up potential bingo lines. Those are smart moves -- being far back you have to try and open a closed board -- but the problem with that situation is forever that your opponent has a large initiative advantage; while you are trying to open up good plays, it can make decently-scoring waiting moves while trying to "nurse" a good rack, and whatever possible bingo lines you open up, your opponent gets the first crack at. BLISTER C6 finally "seals the deal" for Elise.
