Quackle held two blanks, Elise had none; Quackle bingoed twice, Elise only once, and then only for 59 points. Elise was left with the Q on its rack at the end of the game. But Elise won by 23 points. How?

Elise's defensive play throughout the game helped a lot. Look at the moves FEZ I11, VAPID 2J and KAROO B10. Not only do they score well, but they also block triple word lines. For a player trying to make up ground, such plays are important. Quackle's big plays were only 66 and 70 points -- if they had a triple word score available, they could easily have been 80 or 90 points each.

Elise (and computer players in general) love closed games of Scrabble. The fewer scoring opportunities there are, the less work they have to do in order to calculate which ones they "own" and which their opponents "own". Especially in deep-ply simulation, the lower variance in results really helps the computer to find the best move. So, if for some reason you try to play against Elise, keep the board wide open as long as you can!
